I purchased an emac for a friend that needs one for his kid.I replaced the hard drive for a flashing folder on startup. Afterwards, loaded OSX 10.4 and upgraded to 10.4.10, also installed additional RAM to 1GB. I was able to boot from the hard drive and the additional RAM showed. I didn't think much of it but audio was absent during the proceedure. My first trouble shoot was to plug in a headset to see if there was any audio output. There was output to the headset, but it was scratchy and distorted with one side intermittant. At least there was some audio. So, I surmised that maybe there was some kind of speaker on/off selection in the preferences. I found a selection in audio preferences for a speaker icon on the desktop so I selected that, no icon appeared and no audio from the speakers. That's where I stopped, having no way to turn on the unit with a start bypass. I also surmised that leaving the inside exposed while operating might be a little dangerous around the CRT. What next?
What next? I have replaced hundreds of logic boards on eMacs, so I know about a variety of 'gotchas' that you can encounter on reassembly!
The first one is the row of small connectors along the logic board. There are 4, and they are close to one of the speakers. One of the connectors is for the internal speakers. I would re-check all those connectors. All you need to do is take the outside cover off, and remove the curved metal panel covering the logic board area. You won't need to remove anything else.
Hope this helps you...

With the computer face down on the left hand side I remember reinstalling three connectors to the logic board that appeared to go to the speakers. Maybe it's the fourth connection.I'll remove the cover again to make sure that they are engaged properly. OBTW. I found the keyboard speaker mute and volume control. I usually work on PCs and am not too functional on the Mac all in ones yet. Thank you for your prompt reply. I was not aware of that fourth connection.
That fourth connector was disconnected. Hard to see it because it was black. Reconnected the connector and heard the start tone. Played a few tunes and shut down to wait for MS office for Mac and iLife programs to show up. Thanks
