Question from Catapult admin (me).

Over the last 3 weeks or so, we have been experiencing problems with our email clients being able to connect to our email server. We have them set to check our accounts every 5 mintutes. This should be more than enough time to complete a POP session without any issues.

Has something changed on your end that would be causing this problem?

What suggestions do you have for correction our issue?

-------------------------------------------------------

Question from our web hosting company.

What kind of error’s are they getting when they try to check mail? Are they getting this error with every mail account they have, or just with one or two? Are they getting and error every time they check their mail, or are the error’s happening sporadically?

-------------------------------------------------------

Response from Catapult admin.

It is happening with multiple user accounts. Out email client is the OS X Mail application. It is set to check every 5 minutes. I have used these setting for as long as I can remember. Like I stated earlier, this problem began about 3 weeks ago. Basically throughout the day we may be asked to re-enter our email account password. The email client is setup to remember these passwords, so re-entry should not be necessary. When the password is re-entered it usually does not take, forcing us to take the account offline for a short period of time.

-------------------------------------------------------

FYI - My in-house PCs are working just fine. So it appears to be isolated to the OS X mail client.

I have check the Apple Discussions forum and have found no answers. What I have determined from my reading is this: our problem is simply the that the OS X mail client has no way to adjust its timeout and/or resolve a connection error.

As I stated above, the problem has only come about within the last few weeks. Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Since you say the PC's are working fine, then it's most likely not something on their end like you suspected. In the last few weeks what have you done in the wey or upgrades, intrustions to your network, policy change, etc. Also could you try downloading, configuring and trying Thunderbird to see if you get the same error? At least we will be able to narrow down the problem to if it's a problem with the OS's connection problems, or the mail app itself.

I have a configuration like your talking about but mine is set to check every 3 minutes. I've experienced the same sort of timeout type problems, where I clidk getmail, and the wheel spins and spins and spins, but then after I click again it works. I also double checked and yoru right, no way to change timeout. I've also had problems where I hae to re-enter a password to my main mail account which is stored in the keychain. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you exited the keychain, or if you maybe did something as root it screwed up the keychain. I'll see if I can find out anyting else. If not I'll re-release this to the pool.

I'll take a look at Thunderbird. I wish it was something as easy as the keychain, but I find it hard to believe that it could something that simply. Since this is a problem that is showing up on all my Mac desktops. As far as software goes, I've upgraded my Mac to the most recent version of Tiger (10.4.4), but my other Macs are still running (10.4.3). Ultimately, I believe it is some kind of network traffic problem that we are running into at our hosting service.

When I updated my OS 10.4.2 to 10.4.3, I had problems with the application preview. After much persistance I did manage to get it working.

I would venture to say that during the update of the OS something has gone astray and it may be as easy as the issue being in the keychain.
I would also run the disk utility found in the utilities folder in case it is just a repair permissions issue as well..

I guess that I haven't made it clear enough. The passwords work some of the time. My keychain is working just fine, even after I nuked it, I'm still getting the same results as I was before. I am familiar with what happens when the keychain is the problem. It generally affects more than one application too.

The problem we seem to have here is network traffic problem and the inability of the Mail app to adjust to it.

I ran Thunderbird all day yesterday without a single error. Its timeout is set to 60 seconds. I have no idea what the Mail app is set to. I just know you can't play with it.

Hello,

I have a suggestion that just might help you.

Go to Utilities folder>Keychain Access. When that is open, click on the lock at the top in the title bar. You will need to enter the admin password.

Now leave that padlock unlocked and quit Keychain Access.

Give Mail a try out. Does it still ask for your password?
