I have a G4 on dsl networked to a minimac airport wireless connection. It was working fine for a long time, but somehow now there is no longer a SERVER icon for the G4 showing up on my minimac.
I tested diagnostics and it indicated that the network is fine. I have no problem accessing the internet and e mail on the minimac; but since I cannot get an icon for the G4, I can not transfer any files between the two computers.
Once, after many tries, I did actually get the server icon to reappear, but when I tried to click it, nothing happened, and eventually the server icon disappeared again.

Go to Finder Go menu > Connect to Server.
type in: afp://[IP address of G4 goes here]
Come back with the result - are you able to share files?

Thanks... I now have the network server icon...but it has been so long since I needed to use the password that I have FORGOTTEN IT!
It does allow me to be a GUEST, which provides me with a DROP BOX, which I assume I can drag and drop files into? I did so, but can not find any trace of them on the other computer (G4 that is connected by dsl).
Incidentally, when I try to connect from the G4 to the wireless Macmini, i see a server icon but it is called local.computer.
Is there a way I can remove my old password and start over?

I finally 'guessed' my password, but it is good to know how to reset it if I need to in the future. THanks.
I can NOW exchange files in one direction... going from the wireless to the G4 (on dsl). But on the G4, which has OS 10.3.9, I have no access to the minimac. I tried to set up a new location by entering the IP #, submask, and router # but to no avail.

Setting up a new location on which computer? I don't think that would be appropriate.
Let's see if I understand your network setup - dsl connected by ethernet to G4, G4 sharing internet via wireless to mini?
The wireless connection uses "local" network reserved IP addresses. When you use Go > Connect to server, type in only numbers in the local reserved range (172.x.x.x, 10.0.x.x, or 192.168.x.x). Is that what you've been doing?
Has anyone told you it is safer to get a wireless router to set up between computer and DSL modem, to share internet and have a firewall to protect you from the rest of the world?

Yes, that is my set-up... and I used Go >Connect to Server apf://192.168.x.x
I DO use a WIRELESS router...maybe that was not clear. I understood, however, that it is LESS safe unless you use WPA setting or something like that on the wireless network.
You said:

Maybe I worded it vaguely.
I was referring to the fact that I can transfer only in one direction...from my minimac to the G4 (which is on dsl) but I have no way of going FROM the G4 if I wanted to transfer from G4 to the minimac.... or is that not possible?
THanks for all the help.

You are going to have to clarify one more time - it's the "on dsl" that's got me confused. Do you mean the G4 is connected by ethernet to a router which is the first thing connected to the dsl modem? Or, do you mean the dsl modem is a router, and the G4 is directly connected to it by ethernet?
And did I have it correct that the G4 shares internet by wireless? "Shares internet" here meaning that internet sharing is turned on in System Prefs and the G4 is transmitting a wireless signal just for the mini to use. I'm sorry if also confused you with terms here...
We are getting to the root cause here and I really need to understand what is connected where.
Where is the wireless router connected?
Let's sidestep the wireless security until I understand the network.

THanks for your patience, and persistent help.
I have a G4 powerbook connected to a Belkin wireless G router (802.11g 54 mbps 2.4 gHz) at its ethernet port. A cable from the wireless router and the phone line are plugged into the back of the DSL modem.
As for "SHARES internet"... I mean that I can access the internet on my macmini through the wireless connection.
I checked SYS PREFS to see what the INTERNET SHARING setting was, and it indicated that I shared Internet from AIRPORT to a Computer on a port with built-in Ethernet.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, that's important. You need to go to sharing preferences on the powerbook and turn OFF internet sharing. That kind of sharing isn't what you intended. (It makes the powerbook into a base station).
On the mini, go through setting up wireless again, making sure it is using the Belkin as the wireless source/base station.
