i did a google search on my error and found this very same question asked. i tried the suggestions that were here and i still have the same error.
"Entourage 2004 Database Cannot Be Opened In New Installed Entourage 2004 Under Os 10.4.2." i am using os 10.4.3.

Can you give the exact text of the error message? The quote you gave seems to be the title for another troubleshooting thread.
What kind of problem were you having with Entourage before reinstalling?
Have you tried to rebuild the database file?

the exact error message I'm getting is "this identity cannot be opened in this version of Entourage". I wasn't having any issues with entourage. being a new mac user (this is my powerbook g4 laptop in question) when i went to use entourage for my work email client, entourage removed all of my email from my pc netscape email client at work, so i "thought" i have uninstalled entourage. but now, that i have a power g4 at work, and i am an primary mac user, i wanted to "reuse" my laptop for my work email as well. when i went to "add" entourage to the laptop,(office 2004 for the mac). that is when i started getting this error message. i tried uninstalling the application and doing a complete reinstall instead of a custom install, and i can't get entourage to open. so then, i uninstalled office 2004, and installed office x. i got entourage to open and work, but i can't Import the files (address book, calendar, tasks, notes) from entourage 2004 because the office x Importing function doesn't recognize the office 2004 file i exported. so because I'm a NEW mac user, I'm stuck. and the last thing i want to do is delete and reinstall the os (tiger 10.4.3) thanks for your help dale.

I see your problem. The Entourage database was created/modified with the 2004 version, so will not open in the older version X.
Here's what you can try:
The X version is not going to help you at all, so remove that.
Copy the 2004 version to your computer if you have removed that.
Before attempting to open Entourage, remove the various Microsoft files in your user/Library/Preferences folder
specifically - the com.microsoft.entourage.plist file
and in the Microsoft folder in that same Preferences folder, remove the com.Microsoft.entourage.prefs.plist file
It won't hurt to move that whole Microsoft folder to your desktop.
Launch Entourage while holding the Option-Apple keys. If Entourage launches, you should be asked to choose to rebuild the database file, with various choices. You should select all of them. The rebuild will take a while.
If no still no launch. then I don't know, although you should check at the support files through the Microsoft.com web site.

i tried what you suggested, but alass, it failed. i then went to microsoft. NO help at all. so i re formated my drive with os x tiger, and restarted and all is well now. i imported the entourage database and all is great.
