I am no longer able to open Entourage because of a read write error -40. I ran a fsck and that did not help any. I have 2gigs worth of emails which I burned onto a DVD as a backup. I was told that at 2gigs the program has troubles. I was also told that the newer version Office 2004 should be able to open Entourage and my database so I downloaded the trial version for MS and i got two new error messages -61 and 2. Any idea on how I can fix this or at least access my data?
Thank you!!!

Howdy!
How much room do you have left on your computer's hard drive?
First, if you have space, back up your User/Documents/Microsoft User Data (just duplicate it) folder (the whole thing).
Then, start Entourage while holding the option key. Make sure no other Office apps are running (Word or PowerPoint). Do a Typical Rebuild and see if that helps.
Have you repaired permissions yet? apps/utilities/disk utilities/repair permissions.

Hi Nathaniel,
I only had 4 gigs left but I now have 30+ although I have not restarted my computer since I trashed. I have repaired permissions. When Entourge tries to launch and stops it asks if I woudl like to rebuild data or something like that and when I accept it goes to the error message...
I burned the office x identities which was 2 gigs, do I still need to copy the entire user data folder?
Thank you so much for your help.

If your burn is recent then don't worry about it. I just say to back it up before doing a typical rebuild.
Restart and then start up Entourage holding down the option key till you see "Typical Rebuild" screen. Choose it and hopefully it will rebuild your database.
Entourage, though you delete files, saves anything and everything till you do a Typical Rebuild at which time it compacts all your data and really deletes any deleted items.
Let me know how this goes.

Need more data:
Which OS X?
Which apps do you use regularly?
Do you have your system cd? You should boot up with it and Repair Disk (Don't reinstall OS X but go to File/Open Disk Utility then restart while holding the x key to get back to your home system).

I am on 10.3.9. I mainly use entourage, illustrator, photoshop, explorer and safari.
I did the boot with the repair disk from the install disk and nothing major showed up. I restarted after running repair disk.
is there any truth to what I was told of Entourage quitting at 2 gigs?
Is there anything else I can try?

I've heard anywhere between 2 and 8 gigs. I am thinking you probably have a corrupted attachment in an email that's not allowing you to open Entourage.
Do you have webmail for your email? You might try removing any that are there (read and delete them on the server so Entourage doesn't have to read them) and see if Entourage opens.
If this doesn't work you may have to delete your user data and start over, but we're not going here yet. How close to this crash is your cd back up? Hopefully the corrupted file isn't on that back up database.

Looks like the main advice on these pages is to reinstall Entourage, but check out these pages for more.

On the link I gave you for this,
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/2004.html#new7
it says this:
7) I have a damaged Entourage X database that is over 4GB, can the new database utility repair the old database?
The problem is that you have to get the data into 2004 before the database repair tool can operate on it. If your data is damaged in X, it most likely can't be imported into 2004. Your only real solution is to go to a backup.
This isn't good news and you might have to start over.
However I did find a free Entourage database fixing program but it's about a 50/50 shot. Let me see if I can find it.

Hi Nathaniel- Good news! Entouraid seemed to recover most of them. Thank you so much for the recoomendation and your help.
I was wondering if you had any insite on the desktop image. I changed the desktop image yesterday but now I am unable to change the image....the beachball spins for ever. ....

Glad Entouraid worked! Now you'll probably be backing up your Microsoft User Data a bit more I'll bet!
Desktop image? Have you tried right or control clicking on the desktop to change the image? You may have chosen an image that's too large (typically, stick with jpgs and gifs). And, make sure the desktop images is in your User/Pictures folder and not somewhere else.
Let me know if that helps.

I tried that which launches my system pref and it just keeps spinning. I let it go last night and it kept spinning all night long. I have restarted a few times but to no avail. Is there a way to reset something like that not through system pref?
In a realated issue....I also have an external hard drive which loves to not be recognized once I restart my mac and it takes a good long time to have it pop up. Any advise? The only way I get it to go is by powering my external on and off until it is finally shows up.
Thanks,
J

Move all your desktop images somewhere and make sure they aren't more than 1MB each. Then make sure they are stored in Users/Pictures.
For your hard drive, make sure you drag it to the trash to make it "unmount" then turn it off every night to save wear and tear. Then turn it on after your computer's on, should come on. If not, then use Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility, click on the drive and then click "Mount" if the drive is greyed out and not on your desktop.
If these tips don't help we should close this thread and have you post new questions.
