I need to clean the ink jet nozzles to print art cards. How can I access the nozzle clean function when the Leopard MacOSX.5.3 does not show the utilities tools or even the ink levels with the Epson 860 printer driver.

You could always try starting the utility up directly from within /Library/Printers/EPSON (may need to find it inside another folder in there).
Is there any chance you've added the printer using the third-party Gutenprint driver instead of using the Epson driver via More Printers > Epson USB?

I found out that Leopard MacOS does not support Classic OS. Epson has not upgraded their driver for Epson 860 to operate with MacOS X. Gutenprint is the driver the Apple dealer put in which does not have the Utility option to clean nozzles.
Within Library/Epson/Utility, a dialogue box opens asking to choose a printer. Epson 860 and no printer shows up in the dialogue box to choose from. So, around in circles since Leopard does not support Epson 860 and does not give me the option of even choosing the Epson. I am screwed and will have to buy a new printer.

OK, a temporary solution to share with you. I run a b/w 4-page document through the printer to get the ink jets working on the Epson 860. Then, set up the print job of my art cards. The blue lines disappear, the colour is true after the ink jets seem to go into an automatic clean mode and voila, the printer is up and running again for awhile.

Glad it is mostly working.
