Hi,

I'm trying to get my laptop running 10.4 to print to an Epson CX4600 printer over ethernet (the printer is connected to a Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB). I've previously connected the printer to the laptop and it installed the correct driver, but when I try to connect via internet and choose the printer model, the printer model is not showing up. I am seeing a whole bunch of Epson gimp drivers for many models, but not mine. I did install the Gimp drivers a couple of years ago, but not for this printer.

I suspected that I need to uninstall the gimp drivers (I don't need Gimp anymore), but I am unable to. I get the message "there was an error" when I try to complete the uninstall using the Gimp uninstaller.

If there was someway to located the drivers that were installed when I connected directly via USB I thought I might be in good shape - but no luck. Any suggestions on what to try next, or how to uninstall the gimp drivers?

Regards,
Raymond

Hi Raymond,
There are two kinds of drivers on OS X - Carbon (old style) and CUPS.
The driver from Epson is a Carbon driver, where they get to limit the driver to whatever comm protocol they want. The driver is only for USB, which is why it only shows up for USB.

You need a CUPS driver to use the standard CUPS network protocols in OS X. Apple included Gimp-Print (now called Gutenprint) CUPS drivers in OS X since 10.2 because they recognize this problem. Install the newest Gimp-Print (again, it's now called Gutenprint):

Finally, use IPP for your print server, and make sure you enter the print server's queue name in Printer Setup. It's P1 (manual page 25).

Hi,

thank you for your quick, detailed response. I have been continuing to troubleshoot on my side. It is working (used LDR), but takes 2 minutes to print a single page. Anything I can do to speed up the printing?

I don't know of any way to speed that up.
Sorry.
