Hello,

I have just purchased on Ebay a G5 single 1.8 with 1.5m and 160gb hd.

It arrived with tiger 10.4.8. I could not get connected to the internet because I cannot edit the configuration required to.

I have attempted to connect to linksys router with DHCP with ethernet cable hardwired. Same config as my G4. I can get the port light to come up by setting manually speed- and full duplex and turning off ipv6. But no traffic will pass because the dhcp is not changing to the required subnet.

I therefore tried to connect direct to cable using the static ip address and gateway dns etc - still cannot get traffic to pass with straight or crossover cable.

I uninstalled (erased tiger that came with g5) and ccc g4 config to G5 and still same problem. When I use the network utility to check the en0 int ip address it is picking up something not in my subnet range. Looks like b class address (145.x.x.x) and I need to use 192.x.x.x

When OS sees eth port link up why is dhcp not assigning address as per router setup???

This problem is same on tiger 10.4 and panther 10.3 ( i have panther disks)
I am beginning to believe that it is a G5 issue - eth port problem or because the machine may have had an airport FW device connected, what else is there to try?? Two days at this problem now.

Any one have any idea how to get this g5 to the internet

thanks

John

Howdy!

Use Linksys' control panel utility accessible through a web browser. Connect the cable internet and connect to your router via regular ethernet cable and type this address into your web browser:

http://192.168.1.1

Set up a WEP key (wireless password if you have wireless broadcasting) and a log in so every time you access the above address you'll be the only one who can.

Then set your router for DHCP 'Renew' your DHCP Lease. This should get your router to talk to your ISP.

Then, create a 'Location' on your computer and call it 'My Router' or something you like, and then configure 'Ethernet'. Ethernet should automatically see your ethernet connection. Apply the settings and try to get out to the web.

Let me know if it doesn't.

thx for your response

The g4 and an xp machine work ok thru the router using dhcp no problem its only the g5 - The g5 has NOT got a wireless aiport hw ( but looks like it previously had).

Im thinking its the eth en0 interface or if I could source an airport to test, NO mates to borrow one from ;-) hence Im stuck with hardwire to router or direct to Cable interface.

I will be doing this test shortly
Connecting the g5 directly using the static IP address etc and powering down the cable modem for 30 seconds to see if its a mac address issue on the provider. Will let you know here later

Thanks again John

Hi

am I missing your piont?

I can confirm that the router is working ok for two out of three Machines using Dhcp.

The G5 (not working machine) cannot connect in addition even with manual configuation to network settings cannot access internet. machine says not connected. I am using same settings that work when applied to the g4 work.

Follow my directions, then let me know if they work. I don't think you have done so...if you did follow my direction (you created a 'Location' on the G5, yes?) then you might have a bad ethernet card on that machine.

Hi

Are you thinking that forcing old config on g5 can be renewed (wireless) to release old setup? .... ok

I did as you suggested on linksys wrt54gs renewed security on the wireless page before connecting g5 and also while connected with same results, disabled wireless also with same results, I did a physical check as last resort the eth port is there internally on a board that has connector fixed to it.

Ok, I think we're getting confused.

You need to create a 'Location' in the apple menu for your ethernet connection, and a separate one for your wireless. Keeps things simple.

Once you have done this, try to connect using ethernet. It should work. If not, let me know.

You don't need the WEP Password to connect via ethernet when you're behind the firewall your router creates.

If you want to use wireless on your G5 check the password on the wireless router and then follow these steps:

Apple Menu/Locations/Network Preferences/choose your wireless network Location as you've named it/airport/By default join 'a specific network'/choose your network/enter correct password for that network

This should do it. You'd then choose that wireless Location and wait a few seconds for the wireless icon in your menu bar to show the name of your network and all 5 bars of connectivity lit up.

natobasso,

I believe you are on the right path I visited local mac shop and he advised that
its probably because the hard disk is a clone that o/s will not reset netwrok settings.

I purchased a wirless adaptor and downloaded drivers for the belkin usb thingy and it works ok ;-) G5 online using wireless ( I had no wireless stuff).

Thanks for your valuable insight to problem - I will attempt to get the ethernet port running later, I am going to get another hd as backup and install new operating system (maybe leopard or tiger) but for now I am happy.

Thanks again
John

Great! Glad wireless is working.

Instead of a new hard drive you might need to just reinstall OS X (will erase your hard drive).
