hello

I have a G4 ibook running osx 10.39. The external hard drive is a Western Digital My Book premium 400g connected usually by firewire (also sometimes USB).

It had been running fine for the two months since i've had it, but today while playing music in itunes 7 (itunes library is on this external drive), itunes stopped playback and became hung. On attempting to click on the external hard drive in finder it could not be accessed or dismounted (just beachball!) which persisted hence the only option being a force quit and restart.

Since restarting, the drive does not mount automatically although makes the sounds and flashes the lights when connected. It is however still recognised in System Profiler and Disk Utility. In disk utility, the drive is shown as being 'Not mounted', attempting to manually mount the drive via the button in disk utility gives "Mount of “My Book” succeeded" in the log, but of course the drive remains unmounted.

Attempting to run 'repair disk' on the drive, it runs for a few minutes, then stops with an error, the log of this being the following:

Code:
Repairing disk for “My Book”
** /dev/disk1s1
** Phase 1 - Read FAT
** Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains
** Phase 3 - Checking Directories
Unable to read directory (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Disk Utility stopped repairing “My Book” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit
Repair attempted on 1 volume
	0 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired
In addition to this, I have tried disconnecting the drive and powering down the ibook removing power supply/battery etc for 5 mins and then reversing this with no success.

Also, it should be noted that all this has been tried by connecting by both USB and firewire with multiple cables with exactly the same results. All of these ports work fine with other devices.

I've been tearing my hair out over this all day! - any help would be greatly appreciated

thankyou

(and sorry this is in 'memory' . could not see a hard drive option nor a suitable one in peripherals)

Hi Tim

This error;

The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Could mean the hard drive went bad.

If you can get DiskWarrior, use that to try and repair the drive.

If DiskWarrior can't repair the drive, since it's only two months old, call the company and try to get it replaced or repaired under warranty.

Hi, thanks for replying.

DiskWarrior indeed did not work (could not even recognise the drive), but I managed to get the drive connected to a PC and ran some scans which confirmed the drive had multiple bad sectors and most probably is beyond any user repair.

Back it goes I guess!
