TICKET ARCHIVE -> File Vault Trouble!

Hi,
The first problem I have is that my powerbook kept shutting down, with a message that I needed to restart the pbook by holding down the start button. This message came up in a large grey box, in a number of languges.
The shut downs seem to be random, sometimes when opening files, sometimes when backing up, but no pattern.
I thought of what I had done resently, and it came down to adding virus protection and turning on the File Vault.
I have tried to turn the File Vault off, but can't.
Its also seemed to have crashed my Mail, and Dock, and Safari preferences.
How can I shut off the Vault and also get back all my mail folders -I've got my Inbox back but not sent mail.

What can I do?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, my name is Dan, and I'll be helping you today.

Well, th ebig grey box is a nice front for a bad problem. The first thing i need you to do is restart the powerbook while holding down CMD-S.

this will take you into Single user mode,

at the prompt, type fsck -fyvv

when the computer is done, if any error messages come up, run it again. then startup your computer, and-
1. Fire up Disk utility (applications/Utlities/), and select your boot drive from the list on the left. Your boot drive is the topmost rightmost icon in the finder, the very top hard drive.
Make sure the first aid tab is selected, and click repair permissions at the bottom. If the log starts going crazy and you end up with a long list of stuff that was fixedrun it again.

2. Open up the Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type the following commands EXACTLY! don't want to sound insulting or pessimistic, but we're entering the dark world of UNIX and one wrong command goes bad, FAST.

sudo periodic daily

which translates to : (SUperuser DO run Periodic scripts for Daily)
it will ask for your password. type it in even though the characters WILL NOT appear as you type them.

Wait for the command prompt to come up again, and then run

sudo periodic weekly
and
sudo periodic monthly

Hope this helps!

Hi Dan,

I typed in fsck -fyvv but it says command not found.

When I try to run teh repair permissions it starts the repair, then comes up with the big grey box again?

What should I try?

wow.... so sorry. its not -fyvv, but -fy.

Sorry again, will not use the stupid spell checker. That command should fix you up.

Cheers!

Did the fsck -fy and it said it repaired something. I tried to run the repair permissions through the Disk Utilities but the big grey box came up again.

What do I try next?

keep running the fsck -fy over and over until it fixes everything... maybe with sudo fsck -fy if you're up for it

Do I type sudo fsck -fy in the single user mode?

Yessir..

Keep in mind that it will ask you for your passwod, and when you type it the characters will not show up.

once that is done, statup your computer normally, and go straight to the terminal.

type:

sudo diskutil repairpermissions /

Not that there is one space between repairprermissions and /

Have run the sudo diskutil repairpermissions/ in Terminal, and it came up with a long list of repairs.
I tried the normal permission repair in Disk utility but the big grey box came back.
I have now managed to turn the File Vault off.

What should I try next?

Keep running the diskutil thing over and over until you no longer see Owner and Group corrected.

Have run diskutil again several times, but there isn't Owner or group refered to.

What do I try now?

Sorry- the owner and group would be in disk utility.

once that has run a few times, get to your stuff and back it up.

Documents etc...

And then i think we will have to re-install your system.

I can provide a temporary service in which you would connect to it, and it would back up all your mail accounts, ical calendars, addressbook entries, keychain etc.

PLease let me know if you wish to do this.

No joy with the permissions, keep getting the grey box.

Its not allowing my backup to complete. Can you let me know of teh temp seervice for my mail, etc. Have manually backed up the other files onto an external drive
