Hi

I have a Powerbook 12" G4 running Tiger 10.4.2

768g ram 80g HD.

I recall there were all sorts of problems w file vault when introduced..........

Is it OK now?

What are its pros and cons?

Does it slow things down?

Does it i.e. encrypt all of my 44 g iTunes library? (Hope not!)

Can you choose which things to encrypt...i.e. Documents.

Thanks for any clarification for one who sees thru a glass darkly.

Edward, welcome on macosx.com

My personal opinion, obviously subjective, but not so after hearing people complains...

If your Mac contains military important and classified data, yes, why not.

Otherwhile, get away (yes, really) of that tool.

You want to save&protect data ?
(1) create an encrypted image through DiskUtility
(2) use PGP
http://www.pgp.com/products/tiger.html
(3) or have a look to other software

I must confess, Edward, I never trust Apple's softwares on two of them:
(1) built-in automatic update: I always made -and make- manually the update
(2) FileVault

Philippe

Oups, click on send too quickly...

(1) However, for a frequent traveller, I must admit that FVLT can be one
of the way to secure data

(2) forget to mention these articles
