my Mac G4 Powerbook...Upon start up finder is not responding and I cannot access any programs or utilities. I boot in safe mode still same result. I did the fsck. No results. I attempted to reset prams..still not results. I am not sure what happened but I believe it is a quicktime error or something. I added a file update to quicktime for burning dvds and that's when the problems began. When I pull finder up in the dock it says Application Not Responding even when I relaunch etc. Not sure what to do now I can use command s but they only thing that work was the /sbind/fsck/ -fy which says if did a fix etc. Finder still does not respond when I reboot though..Help.Lee

Lee,
Do you recall version of Quicktime are you using? What version of 10.3 are you running? This is important as there was one update in Quicktime that was problematic and there is a fix. But it will only work with a specific version of Quicktime and the OS. Do you remember if you restarted the powerbook after the update, or did you just shut down?
Try this and see if the problem gets corrected.
Plug in the power adaptor and locate your 10.3 install disk. This must be the install and not the restore disk.
Start up the powerbook using the 10.3 disk. (start up powerbook, insert CD and immediately hold down the c key.
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.
Have Disk Utility Repair the drive. Watch the activity screen to see if it does any repairs. If it does, hit repair drive again when it is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them.
While fsck does this, Disk Utility will do a better job of finding errors. If you continue to get errors, then it is time for one of two things to do. Try using Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro CD to repair the drive, or wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install of the OS. The latter will make you lose all of your files and installed applications.
Keep me posted on how you do.

Lee,
What did you do when you used the install CD to start up? What is in the previous drive folder - or is it a previous system folder?
If it is a previous system folder, you did an archive install. This saved all your files and preferences.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
With the Preference folder open go to the view menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order making it easier to find files.
Delete the following:
com.apple.safari.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist
com.apple.quicktime.plist (this maybe also called com.apple.quicktimeplugin,preferences.plist)
Close the window, empty the trash. Now give Safari a try out.
Keep me posted on how you do.

The ticket closed automatically due to no activity for three days. I reopened it as I want to make sure you are up and running.
