I have just installed the latest update of stuffit 12.0.1
I use G4 Powerbook. 1.67 Ghx 512 ram

Every time I try to open a folder on the desktop the finder quits and relaunches. (my files disappear and then all reappear). I think this is the only new things I have done in the last couple of days that might cause the problem.

I can access all my files using a second computer with wireless access to the first, so all is there... just can't get at it on the G4.
Any help welcome.
Thanks
Paul

Hello Paul

thanks for using us here at macosx.com and I will try to help/advise you as best I can

first of all boot the Mac from the installer disks and run the Disk Utility (choose the language you want and then look in the menus - don't install the OS again...)

Run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.. repeat until it says no repairs needed (or words to that effect)

If stuff was fixed try running the Mac again...

If that doesn't fix it consider

Zap the PRAM (hold down Apple-Alt-P-R on start up till you hear the chime at least a second time, some go for 3 to be sure)

Start in "safe" mode (hold shift as it restarts)

If desperate try Archive and Install from the installer (preserve users and settings...)

Let me know what happens

PS as usual if you dont have a backup make one now before doing anything else (at the least your home folder)

Unfortunately this did not seem to work. I discovered Stuffit have issued a patch to cope with this problem but it still didn't rectify the problem. In the end I did a total time machine restore from two days prior to installing latest Stuffit. This was a hassle but has worked. I shall simply not update Stuffit 12.
Many thanks for help
Paul

That is very annoying I must say...

Strangely I use stuffit 12.0.1 myself without any issues. I am running Leopard 10.5.2 on intel Macs and 10.4.11 on G5 DP towers...

Very strange - but I agree I would not be keen to try the update again myself either...

I wonder if it is tied to something in the G4?

Glad that at least TM bailed you out

Sorry I couldn't help more this time
