TICKET ARCHIVE -> Finder Relaunches When Navigating to Files On Server

I've been having an ongoing problem at work: while navigating to job files, the finder occasionally relaunches.

System is a G5 1.8ghz, on OSX 10.3.8.

The server is an Xserve (sorry, not sure what model) running OSX Server (sorry not sure what version).

I work in the prepress department of a small printshop. We store all the job files on the Xserve. The practice at this shop is to open and work on all files over the network, something I've never liked doing, but they insist.

The two G5s we have are both connected via gigabit, and the gigabit switch is fairly new -- although this problem was happening before the switch was installed.

Sometimes, while navigating to job files on the server, the finder suddenly quits and relaunches. Sometimes when this happens, when I re-navigate to the folder I was going to, the finder relaunches as soon as I double click the folder that caused the relaunch just before. Just yesterday, this happened 3 times in a row, until I finally clicked the triangle to open the folder, which worked.

Possibly related: we have a Xenith Xitron RIP on a quad processor P4 box running Windows 2003 server. Our hot folders are stored here, and we drag our imposed PDFs from the Xserve job folder to the hot folder on the RIP. Occasionally, the copy status bar hangs before completing. The only way I have been able to clear the status bar is relaunch the finder. I mention this, because it may indicate the problem is on Xserve, not my system.

The other guy I work with does not have the same problem I do, at least the first issue. He is on a new G5 DP system, the model just before the dual core systems were released, and runs Tiger.

Some of the files are very large, and although we are on gigabit, I've never been a fan of opening/working/saving files over a network, and can recall all kinds of problems from doing this in the past (pre-OSX) at other shops I've worked for. Are there any dangers to watch out for while doing this (aside from the above issue)?

Howdy!

The design firm I'm working for has had TONS of OS X server issues. Not the least of which has been losing all data (temporarily) twice due to updates and crashes. That's why I don't trust them, and I don't think you should either.

Check to see what version of OS X Serve you have. If you have tiger, watch out. What kind of back up system is in place?

Our server times out the finder every now and then and just clicking on finder restores it, but not the operation that may have been running at the time.

I definitely recommend using the mac server as your "Back up" not your work area where you might lose files. I am the assistant IT person here and believe me, we just lost a file today even though we have Retrospect because OS X Serve has so many issues.

There are new patches for tiger but I'd say beware, they are far from up to date when it comes to stability.

Let me know if this helps.

I am told that the 2003 Exchange Servers are nearly the best in the business so you're good there.
