In Finder, I know that there are three views. I like column view except for the fact that in list view you can sort by date, name, size, anything. In Column view, I can figure out how to change the sorting preference. Is there a way to switch between sorting by name and sorting by date in Column view?

No, not in Apple's implementation of the Finder. That functionality is available in Path Finder.
