I have MS Word 2004 version 11.3.5, and Font Book 1.0.2
I only use a few fonts, so have enabled only 25 fonts of a total of 123. (All the system fonts I have enabled.)
I have TWO QUESTIONS about fonts.
1) In the System/Library/Fonts folder are listed these fonts which do not appear in the Font Book:
AquaKanaBold.otf, AquaKanReg.otf and
Keyboard.dft, and Last Resort.dft.
I do not think I have deleted them, accidentally or otherwise, but is it possible anyway to delete SYSTEM files?

2. In the list of fonts available in Word, all the enabled fonts are listed, including the system fonts. However, there are THREE fonts included which have been DISABLED -
COURIER CE, GENEVA CE, TIMES CE.
In addition, there are THREE fonts not even shown in the Font Book -
Helvetica CE, Lucinda Grande CY, Monaco CE, Just plain Helvetica, Lucinda Grane and Monaco are enabled and shown listed as System in Font Book.
How can disabled fonts and fonts not even in the Font Book appear in Word?

I would appreciate your usual clear answers.

Thank You, James Johnson

Great tips on adding your fonts to font book:
http://www.mac.com/1/learningcenter/...nts_sound.html

List of required system fonts; move all others out of this folder and into a MY FONTS (name it as you like) just within your hard drive and move all your non-system user fonts here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...%20br%20%2F%20

I personally recommend NOT using FontBook and going with the free (and very powerful) FontExplorer by Linotype. It will even clean your System Fonts Folder for you!
http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorer

Some fonts aren't usable by OS X or Word can't recognize them. Once you organize your fonts correclty you can eliminate this as the issue. Then whichever fonts aren't seen by Word you will know are not seen by the app.

More on how Word loads fonts (though this article talks about Word loading fonts you DON'T want, it seems to apply just as well):
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/FontsKeepLoading.html

And a quote from this website regarding FontBook: "The chances of incurring the problem increase the more that a user utilizes the Font Book utility."

Let me know what happens.

Thank you for your reply and putting me on to FontExplorer by Linotype.
Does this mean I can delete Font Book and FontExplorer will do the job in its place?

Please also let me know how I can "clean my Systems Folder for me" with it.

All my fonts are as supplied by Apple, so they must all be useable by OSX. I can't see how Word can use fonts that are not in Library/Fonts or System/Fonts. Does Word have a sparate fonts folder?
If so, where is it?
My original query was on 1st June, but I have experimented on and off with your suggestions. Hence the delay in responding.

I wouldn't delete font book, just don't use it.

Linotype Font Explorer app/Tools/Clean System Font Folder

Microsoft loads its own fonts temporarily:
