Hi, I have just recently purchased an older G4 and am running OS9 as well as OS10.3. I'm very overwhelmed trying to figure out how to install fonts, what fonts I need to activate in ATM on OS9 to use in Quark, what fonts are and are not already activated. Currently I need to activate a font in ATM to use it in Quark but then it is not activated when I use Illustrator and Photoshop CS.
In my perfect world there would be one place to put fonts and it would work on both OS's. Then I could remove ATM or else figure out how ATM would work with OS10.3 (Illustrator & Photoshop).
Fontbook was working for the first while but now when I open it, I get 2 blank columns and the ever turning "thinking circle" in the upper left corner. Is there a better font management tool I should be using or is Fontbook sufficient for hundreds of fonts IF I can get it to preview fonts again?
Thank you!!
Howdy!
As a general rule, any font you want to use in Classic has to be activated there and any font you want in OS X has to be activated in that environment. There is some crossover (in Suitcase you can see Classic fonts and Os X fonts together) if you buy Suitcase, but otherwise FontBook doesn't care much about Classic.
As I'm sure you're aware, Apple is giving up on Classic altogether and there's less and less support for it as each update to OS X comes out.
Font Book gets really good in Tiger, but I wouldn't bother with it in any previous op system. It can only handle about 3000 fonts before crapping out, and all your fonts must be in the System/Fonts folder. Tiger doesn't require this.
However there's a free (and quite good, though BETA) font option from Linotype called FontExplorer. Find it here:

Let me know how this works for you!
