As a designer, I have a large collection of fonts that I've used for a long time. I use them on a G4 and G5 that each run OSX plus Classic.

Recently, I had to reinstall my system on my G4. Now, all these fonts that I previously had in Font Book are no longer accepted in Font Book. They open, however, in Quark and all my Adobe programs.

I keep these fonts in Home>Library>Fonts. They are all FFIL.

I'ver tried to bring them into Font Book every which way with no luck. I've run out of ideas. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

Hi Ann-Marie!

First, ditch Font Book. It's not made for us graphic designers who use 1000s of fonts. Download http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorer (it's free) and prepare to be amazed!

Also, store only your necessary system fonts in System/Fonts. Font Explorer can help you clean out this folder Tools/Clean System Font Folder. Keep all your user fonts in the first level of your hard drive in a folder named MY FONTS or whatever suits you.

Repair permissions after you do these things and restart and you should be good to go. Font Explorer will even auto activate fonts for CS and Quark apps, or any other app you choose. Pretty sweet, eh?

Let me know if this doesn't work.

Thank you, thank you! I can't wait to try this. I'm not at my computer until Tuesday but will let you know what happens.

In the meantime, out of curiosity, can you tell me why Font Book is not working this time?

One other question:

You said to store all my user fonts in the first level of my hard drive. What do you mean by first level of hard drive?

First level means when you open the hard drive it's all the folders you see initially. Just advising you to load your fonts in an easy-to-reach place.

For example: hard drive/MY FONTS folder

Sometimes when you move fonts they get corrupted and that would then affect FontBooks ability to serve them to your apps. FontBook is not a very powerful font app and is succeptible to these subtle file changes and can't manage very many fonts.

Thanks very much, Natobasso! Font Explorer does much more so hopefully, my fonts and I will live happily ever after.

Excellent! Go to Tools/Clean System Fonts Folders when you can and let FontExplorer clean that folder. Gives you great performance because it removes any non-necessary fonts from being automatically loaded by OS X.

Shall I close this thread now?
