Hi,
I've just made the switch from windows to macs and am quite new to OSX. I am having a lot of difficulty with installing new fonts and then my software recognising them, especially with quark express. I have two apps, one called font book and one called font agent pro and with quite a few fonts I have problems where the font is not found by the software im using and when I manually direct the program to the font file it replaces whole blocks of text which arent meant to be in that font!
I work as a designer/printer so I get jobs sent through with new fonts and I have to install fonts every day. My colleague who uses OS9 and Suitcase does not seem to have these issues
Im sure Im making a very elementry mistake somewhere but if anyone could help I would be very grateful.
Im running OS10.4.2 on a 800mhz powerpc G4.
The software im running is Quarkexpress 6.5, Adobe CS suite & MS office
Thanks,
Howdy!
You're up against a couple of issues:
--use only one font program, I'd recommend FontAgent Pro because it's one of the best in the biz.
--store all your fonts in a central location but not in your LIBRARY/FONTS folder as that might confuse your font program. I have a "Creative Fonts" folder right in the first level of my hard drive directory, organized alphabetically in A-Z folders. FontBook tends to freeze up after about 3000 fonts, though it's improved from Panther to Tiger.
--Quark 6.5 is buggy and there are lots of reports with fonts issues. Try to turn off all quark extensions, after you've situated your fonts, and turn them on one by one till you possibly find the offending extension.
--Have you done some basic system maintenance? Do this regularly: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions. Probably once a week for you since you are in a busy print shop.
--Quark can have problems saving over networks. Do you save files on your hard drive or to a network?
--If you can convert to InDesign I HIGHLY recommend it. Quark is now a full-fledged annoying dinosaur.
Let me know if any of this helps and we'll take it from here.
Thanks very much thats a really helpful. :-)
Yes thank you! I set up a new font folder and now Im using font agent properly and (touch wood) have been able to rip files succesfully from quark and havent had any crashes in two days!
Excellent! I'm glad it's working for you now. Definitely repost if you have further issues.
