I'm running a G4 PowerMac (swivel) I run a computer lab in an elementary school. One day I came into work and some of my file bar commands were in a different language. I made certain that my international preferences were set for English. I don't know what else to do and apparently neither do any techs I've spoken to. Their answer has been to just wipe it and start fresh. I'm wondering if you have any other solutions to my problem. It's not all of my commands, but in every application there are at least three commands that I believe are in German. I wish that I could insert a clip to show you some of these menus and selections.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Pick one of these applications, select it's icon in the Finder and press command + I. Do you see some check boxes with the available languages? Is the English checked? If not, you are lucky; ckeck it and your problem is solved.
If it's not there, it means that some other user has removed it. When you remove a language the localization folder goes to the user's trash and it is possible to delete it. If this is the case, and there is another computer with exactly the same version of Mac OS, let me know so that I'll tell you what to do next.

English is checked, but so is French, German, and Japanese. Should I uncheck everything but English?

Actually, all of the affected programs have many languages checked.

One last thing I just noticed Ruby. I did an info on my new G4 PowerBook and noticed that the same languages are checked in the same programs. However, the difference between the two computers is that my desktop (the troubled one) doesn't have English grayed out. My new has all of the languages checked, but English is grayed out in all applications.

Which OS is installed on your PowerBook? Is it 10.4? Your question is in the 10.3 category. Are you sure that the PowerMac has 10.3 installed?
Do you see foreign commands in Finder too? Or some applications only?
Does this happen when some other user logs in?
Could you try to set a different language and switch back to English?

Oh...ok. My PowerBook is 10.4. I didn't think about that. My Desktop is running 10.3.8. I haven't upgraded to 10.3.9 because I have to wait for school district approval on updates. I do not have foreign commands in the finder at all. Most of them are in Apple Remote Desktop...specifically when I go to add an application or item. It's the "add" and "cancel" buttons. They say, "Annuller" and "Abn". I sat here and checked every one of my applications after running Nortons on it. Nortons fixed quite a bit except for the above mentioned. Also, each application now only has one foreign command. It's in the Edit column, last command, "Special Characters". It now says, "Specialtgn". I also checked several client machines running 10.3.8 and noticed that the only language in the applications is English. There are no other languages to choose from.
I'm going to try another user and reset my languages. I'll let you know.

Hi again Ruby,
I set up a new user and logged in. The same programs have the same commands involved, but the are in Japanese. I don't know how to get rid of the other languages that are checked when I info them. Do I just uncheck them...even though my client machines only have English as an option?
