I've been having some trouble with tasks getting "stuck". one day my calculator stopped working, when I tried to compute something I got that spinning wheel of colors and it never stopped I had to force quit. That problem seems to have rubbed off on other tasks as well. My major applications are all unnaffected (illustrator, excel, acrobat, photoshop, etc...) however occasionally when I click a link online, try to login to an account through Fire, or use fontbook, I get the spinning wheel that never ends. I'd appreciate any help you could provide, Thank you.

Rachel,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Do you shut down your computer every night? If you do, the computer is not doing its routine maintenance jobs.

Download Macaroni - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633

Once installed, have it run all the jobs, then set it to do them every morning when you start up the computer.

I do suggest you run Disk utility to find all the problems and repair them.

Using the OS X CD Disk 1, start up the computer (insert CD, restart, immediately hold down the C key).

When the Installer Screen comes up, release the C key, and do not click on the installer screen. Instead, go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, click on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom far right. Watch the activity screen. If it finds and repairs problems, you will need to click on Repair Drive again. The object is to have it find all the problems and repair them. You may need to click on that button three or four times. You want to see Appears Okay with no reference to repairs done.

Once that is done, click on Repair Permissions. When that is done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.

You should be running smoothly now.

Hi cheryl,
thanks for responding so quickly.
I don't shut down my computer every night, more like once in 2 or 3 weeks.
I followed your directions and ran disk repair, I clicked repair disk around 25 times and still did not get to a point where I saw "appears ok" with no reference to repairs done, so I kind of gave up. I clicked repair permissions, restarted and tried to install macaroni, when I double clicked to install the program I got the spinning wheel of colors that didn't stop and I had to force quit the installer. I would appreciate any other suggestions. I recently upgraded to OS 10.3.9 is there any way to revert to 10.3.6 to see if that could be the problem? Thanks again

Rachel,

It sounds like you need Disk Warrior. This is a stronger more powerful utility.

http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html

And it comes on a CD to start up the computer to do a thorough job.

The only way to revert back is to use the OS X CD and do an archive and preserve install. This will not touch your home folder or your applications.

Start up from your Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Install Disc 1.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.

I do suggest that you download the combo update. You can choose the 10.3.8 - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300570

This update goes from 10.3 to 10.3.8 in one download and has been found to be very stable with no problems after the update.

Since you have experienced problems with 10.3.9, do not install it.

By the way, you are not the only person with problems since that update.

Rachel,

How much memory do you have installed on the computer? What model computer is it?

When you opened the installer, did you have any other programs running? Do you have a firewire drive attached?

Try creating a new user and then log into that users account. Give Calculator a try. Do you still get the spinning color wheel?

!!!!!!!!
it worked!

I have a power mac G5, 1Gb DDR SDRAM, no firewire device attached.
I have the calculator application in my doc, when I logged in as a new user I had to open it from the application folder and it worked, so I logged back in as myself, threw away the one in the dock and replaced it - now my calculator works. I downloaded and installed the 10.3.8 update as well. everything seems to be in order, thank you very much for your help!
