TICKET ARCHIVE -> Fried Computer: Did I Kill My Mac?

All I heard was a pop, the power surge protector that I just bought switched off and then I smelled something burning: it was my Mac, a G4 Power PC. Is it dead? Did I kill my computer? Is this something that can be repaired?

I was actually fearful of something like this happening; that's why I bought the surge protector and it might have been the worst thing I could have done. I just moved to Lisbon, Portugal from the States and was told by people in my building to protect my electronics. Is there any hope? Can something like this be fixed or is my computer just junk now. If it is in fact dead, can any of the information on the memory be retrieved?

I'm almost in tears.

Hi Michael

What is the voltage where you are? 110v or 220v?

Exactly which model G4 do you have?

Sounds like the power supply may have gone bad.

In any case, your data should all be safe. If needed, you could take the hard drive out and out it in another Mac to retrieve your files.

I'm in Lisbon and voltage is 220v. My computer is a Power Mac G4 tower. Yeah, things with the power went wrong, but I'm not sure exactly what. The Ironic part is that I went out and bought a power surge protector, and by actually plugging my computer into it caused the electrical pop and subsequently "fried" my computer.

Your e-mail gives me great hope that I can possibly repair it and if nothing else save my data. I'm a photojounalist and stupidly have not backed up thousands of jpegs including pictures of my son after he was born recently.

Thanks for your expertise.

Sorry for my ignorance. I had to go back to my receipt from 2001 when I bought it: It's a Quicksilver.

Also, the power here is actually 230v.

Michael

The Quicksilver has Auto sensing for voltage, so it should have worked okay on the 230v system.

The burning smell, did it come from the G4 or the Power Surge?

If the smell came from the Surge protector, your machine may be okay. If not, you most likely have a bad power supply.
