Hi, My G3 blue and white, running 9.1.1, is having startup problems. I get the smiling face and it goes through the normal startup process. As the icons at the bottom are loading, it stops and then turns to a blank grey screen. I restarted holding the "c" using utilities and ran disk doctor and disk warrior. They say the hard drive is fine. I was able to copy all my files to an external, but I'd like to get my mac running again if possible.
The icon that the system was stopping at was Aladdin and I removed it from my system, but the problem is still happening. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks, Gene
Hi and welcome to macosx.com
I think you have a corrupted Extension or Control panels in your system.
This is the official Apple procedure for debugging extension problems:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30929
In short, the procedure is (for Extensions, same procedure for Control panels):
(1) start with extensions off
(2) launch the extensions manager
(3) duplicate your actual extension set; give a name you could remember
(4) in this set, disable half of the extensions
(5) reboot normally (i.e. without extensions off)
if this work, the culprit is in the other half set of extensions;
if this not work, the culprit is the current half set
Repeat this recursive process until you find the wrong extension; it is tedious, but it is always working (already done this when I was on 9)
Please do not forget to duplicate the current set before working on it; this will help you to come back to a precise point if you face problem
Warning: sometimes, the reason is the conflict between two extensions because they are loaded one after the other; you can add a "~" tilde character in front of one of the two (tilde = alt-N) to force it to load at the start of the process of loading extensions
The great family of bandits:
* Adobe extension
* Roxio Toast USB and FW extensions
Good luck
