Hi, I recently bought a g3 300mhz b&w mac from a friend. Now i used to use a mac while at uni for audio and visual purposes and a few years later, im here again with the same type of mac i used then. the unit came with a standard dvd drive, hard disk (8 or 9gb) and an extra hard drive of 20gb. in the not too distant future i want to replace this new hd with something close to maximum capacity for this unit.
now i tried to install some old programs on it, but they didnt work (the 20gb ran on OSX tiger, the old hd ran on OS9)- i restarted the computer on OS9 without the discs (thinking they were os9 only) and the question mark file icon flashed.
i tried to reconfigure to what would have been the original config on the g3 and again nothing happened. so i switched back, put the newer hd in its existing position (in the tray at the bottom of the unit), put the old hd back to the slot under the dvd rom (where is was when i got it, connected to the media drive) and now the monitor wont even display the question mark/file screen, its just blank. now i have asked for the original osx discs to try and sort this problem out by rebooting everything (its a new computer so no files have to be backed up). what should i do? should i wait for the original discs to reformat everything there? and should this sort out the problem of my now-blank monitor?
i know its a long question but any kind of help would be very appreciated.

I would definitely wait for the original disks, erase and install a clean OS (I assume 9.x) is on the disks and start from there. Also let Software Update update the software to the latest version of 9.x (I think that's 9.2.2). At that point, you have a functioning bootable drive and can decide whether you want to install System 10.x (it will run slowly, especially if you have <512 Mb RAM) or not. I don't know what System X software you plan to use, but I wouldn't bother with Photoshop or any high end audio/video stuff; web browsing, word processing, database and spreadsheets should be OK. Games won't work, unless they are System 9 games.

HTH and please let us know what happens.

I'm impressed. I have a hard time doing various filters on large images in Photoshop CS2 without a dual 2.0 G5; guess I'm just spoiled. I'll be even more spoiled come Friday, when my quad comes...it will be a very nice "Black Friday" present.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving, and I really like your website.
