Season's Greetings!

Hello, my name is Carolyn and I will try to assit you with your iBook :-)

Ok... you are running 10.4.x or at least trying to ... do you have the system start up disks that came with the iBook? If so, and I'm really hoping you have it if you can't boot to a Desktop, power up the iBook and insert the system disk... hold down the C key at the same time you push the Power Button. Hopefully you'll see an Apple logo appear.. it may take a minute or two. If you get that far, an installer screen will open, but Quit the Installer and click "Utilities" in the Menu. Then click Disk Utility. When that opens, select "Macintosh HD" in the panel on the left. Click First Aid at the top, then click "Verify" ... see if if reports any errors. If it does, write this information down and save it. Then click "Repair"... see if Disk Utility can repair the problem.

You might try resetting the PRAM... here's how:
just reboot your Mac and hold down "Command(the Apple key)+Option(the Alt key)+P+R" while it is booting, when you hear the startup sound for the seond time the operation is complete, and you can release the key combination. Now just let your Mac boot as normal.

I am assuming this is an iBookG4 since it's fairly new??? And is this the 12" 14" ??? There is a safety recall for batteries for iBooks and yours might qualify if you aren't aware of this. Here's the link for information:

Since you are able to get to the Loading OS X sceen, a login item might be causing this and here's information for a fix:
Incompatible login item:

An incompatible login item could cause this symptom.
1. For Mac OS X 10.2 or later, start up in Safe Mode.
2. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
3. From the View menu, choose Accounts then click Startup Items. In Mac OS X 10.2, choose Login Items from the View menu.
4. Select all the login items and click Remove.
5. From the Apple menu, choose Restart.
6. If this resolves the issue, add the login items one at a time until the symptom occurs again. That way you'll know which one is incompatible. Repeat these steps and remove the incompatible item.

And information using Safe Mode:
Reset certain privileges.
Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
Check the volume with fsck.
Type: mount -uw /
Press Return.
Type: chmod 1775 /
Press Return.
Type: reboot
Press Return.

I copy and pasted this infor from:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
And there is more detailed information available there too...

Hopefully something I've suggested might help... please post back and let me know if you need further assitance and thank you for choosing Macosx.com!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)
