What is the result when you run your Apple Hardware Test?

That's on one of the disks that came with your G5, if you are not sure. It will be listed on the label, with simple instructions for booting to the test.

Which G5 do you have, and what is the hardware configuration - how much memory installed, what external devices do you have attached to the system, etc? You can provide as many details as you like.

A weird boot chime might be faulty memory. If you are running a recent 10.4 version, you might find bad memory chips listed in your System Profiler utility

The power light above the power switch should come on, and stay on during a normal boot. Watch that light, and check if it flashes after pressing the power button, Don't count the light simply coming on, but does it then flash, and how many times does it flash? And, does it repeat the same flashing each time you try to boot from power off....?
This is evidence of the power on self-test, which does not run when you restart the Mac.
If you really don't see anything strange about the power light - try reseating the video card. That may help. If not, you may want to get it checked at an Apple service/store.
