I noticed a response to a Garage band question so I thought I would try mine. I have a 400 g3 imac, 12 gig dvd drive, 768 ram, os 10.2.8. I know technically I shouldn't be able to use garage band but most people with 400 or even 333 are able to at least open it and use basic features. I have tried installing several times and it won't open at all. It bounces a few times but doesn't open. I don't crash or anything else weird when I try to open it. It just won't open up. I tried repairing permissions and that didn't help. Any suggestions? Everything else seems to be working fine on the system. Just got it, it had a clean install of 9.6 but I took that off and have only os X. Trying to get garage band running by xmas. it's my daughter's xmas gift to replace her 333. Thanks in advance for any help.

Howdy!
Check here for specs to Garageband:
http://www.apple.com/support/garageband/
I think it's your hard drive that's really slowing you down. If you got a larger one, say a 40GB 80 or 100GB drive you might have a chance getting Garageband running, but without the 600MHz processor it's not going to be a whole lot of fun. And you need at least 10.3.4 OS X for it to work as well and that upgrade is going to require more hard drive space as well.
If it's worth it to you to upgrade the hard drive, give it a shot, but call apple support first to make sure this is worth your while. You might even be better served getting a new mac with iLife/Garageband loaded and you'll get Tiger preinstalled as well, 10.4.
Let me know if this helps.

I did get it running. I found out that it won't work if the computer's date isn't set right. So I fixed the date and it opened. One other small problem which was fixed by reinstalling garage band only, which I found out how to do online. I know it won't be perfect, but it's for a 13 year old who won't be doing much with it except for basics. Now I am having another problem. Trying to put excel and word on by copying and transfering through my zip disk. I have done this before with success. It's a bit time consuming since I only have a zip 100, but it works. But when trying to open excel or word, I get an error message regarding carbonLib. Someone said to go online and download a new carbonlib. Don't even know what that is but I will give it a try. Internet explorer won't let me install anything downloaded through it on this computer so I started using safari and downloads install just fine now. Any advice on how to repair anything needing repaired to keep os 10 working for basic needs on this old of a computer? There must be some problems and issues here and there for me to keep having trouble with different things. I have repaired disk permissions but no sure what else to do to insure that she doesn't fry the thing during use. Can't aford anything better than this right now. I am starting to regret buying it. I should have borrowed a hundred or so more and got her a 600 like mine. But it's too late now.

Wow, way too many questions…
"I did get it running."
(Actually you said you couldn't get it running, so I'm confused. Do you still have a garageband issue?)

(Regardless of who the computer is for, and the noble intentions, and in spite of the fact that it works a little bit, you should pay attention to the garageband specs for best performance. If you don't, you won't even be able to do the little you want to do with it. Even if you manage to load Garageband your performance will be subpar at best. I don't think the clock has anything to do with Garageband.)

(excel and word or excel and word docs? If you're transferring whole programs the best way is to connect your two computers together via ethernet network or with a "crossover" cable. CarbonLib is a necessary component of your op system. You can search your Install Disk 1 for it (Mac OS X install).)

(As I said before, the issues you are having are related to the programs you're using and because you have a G3 imac with a tiny hard drive. You can run 10.2.8 but if you upgrade past that, your old mac will probably run even slower and more buggy than ever.)
(So, recommendations: Get a bigger internal hard drive. Increase your internal RAM. If you don't do these things, Garageband won't function very well, if at all. You're trying to do too much with too little computer.)

I couldn't get it running when I first posted. I did get it running as soon as I fixed the time on the clock. I found several references to the clock issue and garage band online. I guess I will have to keep trying to get word and excel going. Tried to download a carbonlib but it is for system 9. I am confused about the carbonlib issue. As I said, This computer is all I can afford right now so it will have to do. Hopefully, it won't give her too much trouble. All she does is chat and surf a little and do homework in word processing.

Gotcha.
With garageband we're pretty much stuck if you don't have any money to spend. Guess I was wrong about the clock; sorry about that!
With CarbonLib, I found a great place to download it! Go here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4474
After you download this you shouldn't experience anymore zip copying problems. however, if you do, you might need to install zip disk drivers for os 9 (I assume you have the Zip100 USB disk drive?:

Actually, I found my code to register office. Couldn't find it that's why I didn't install it from the disk. I just installed it and it's working great so far. This is pretty much all she will want to do on this computer. I am not going to install anything else on it. I am sure there will be bugs and some problems that pop up and I will research more after xmas on how to keep it running in os 10 for basic stuff. Now I have to get back to work! I have spent the last four days on this computer and have neglected my very busy online business. Shame on me! I will wrap it up all pretty and put it under the tree and hope for the best when she starts using it. So far everything I installed seems to be working ok and it sure looks pretty and different with the OS X icons. She will be happy, I am sure. Garage band is a risk, I know, but we will give it a try. At least she is able to use os 10 as long as we don't fry the drive. Planning on keeping her old puter just in case! Thanks for your help,
Trish

No worries.

When you have the money, I recommend upgrading the hard drive first, then more RAM.
Happy Holidays. (Closing thread.)
