Every time I start up OS X Tiger, it starts the blue-tooth mouse configuration assistant and wants me to switch my blue-tooth Apple mouse on.

I never use it, since I use a wacom intuos 2 tablet.

The next thing that always happens, it an alert from the wacom tablet driver, which also says it 'has found a new tool' and informs me I can adjust it's settings in the wacom panel.

This is also strange, since I have used it every day for weeks and the wacom mouse is not new to this system.

Also, command-? doesn't invoke the build-in help panel. I can from the finders' menu, but when I type something in the search-field, the little 'running' sign it keeps spinning forever.

Altogether it gives me the sense there is something wrong with OS X, but repairing the rights via the Disk Utility doesn't seem to cut it..

Snipper,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you, but I need more information.

When you installed Tiger which install option did you select - Upgrade, Archive or Clean?

Snipper,

Is the Wacom tablet bluetooth or USB? If it is USB, turn off Bluetooth.

Open System Preferences, click Bluetooth, and click Turn Bluetooth Off in the Settings pane.
If you are using an external USB Bluetooth adapter, the Turn Bluetooth Off button may not appear on the Settings pane. If it doesn't, unplug the adapter to turn Bluetooth off.

You can also use the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar to turn Bluetooth on and off.

This should correct the problem with those messages.

As for the command + ? You need to hold the Command (apple key) + Shift + ? and the Help menu should come up.

Hello Cheryl,

The wacom tablet is USB based. I can't turn off blue-tooth tough, because my keyboard is wireless.

Invoking OS X Help worked with cmd-shift-?, but still it keeps spinning endlessly and it doesn't react to clicking on a link in it's 'home' page. The rest of the OS seems to work fine though.

Snipper,

You can turn off the mouse so that Bluetooth does not 'see' it.

1. Turn the mouse over.
2. Turn off the mouse by sliding the power switch until the light is covered.

That should stop those messages.

Have you run Disk Utility to repair the drive recently? You need to use the OS X install CD.
Start up with the OS X CD (matching the version you are running) and do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk utility.
When that opens click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer.

Let me know if that solves the problem.

Hey Cheryl,

• The mouse already IS turned off, it wants me to turn it on every time I start up.
• I used Disk Utility, it's in /Applications and you don't have to start up from the CD any more (since 10.2 if I'm correct).

Snipper,

Now I understand the problem. I did not know the mouse was turned off already.

Do you plan on ever using the mouse? You can remove it from the list of devices.
Go to System Preferences/Bluetooth, click "Devices" and remove the mouse from the list.

When you use Disk Utility from the applications folder - you can only repair permissions. You can not repair the drive unless you start up with the OS CD.

I removed the mouse from the list of devices, but even now the alert comes up.. pretty annoying. I now unchecked the box that says 'start up installing help when a device is missing'. (I don't know the exact phrase because I use the Dutch version.

Also, I restarted from the cdrom and checked both rights and disc. Nothing major on the rights and a 'green' text for the disk. So I restarted from the HD again and.. still MacHelp isn't working. It starts up, but when you try to look something up, it's little grey wheel keeps spinning forever..

Snipper,

I just thought of something. Did you upgrade the Wacom driver?

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6726

How much memory do you have installed and exactly what model Mac do you have?

"[...] Driver start-up issue solved [...]" was in the list of fixed bugs! That sounds promising!

BTW this is a G5 2x2.5 Ghz with 2.5 GB RAM

Snipper,

We are doing well ! Now you just have the Help to solve. Does Bluetooth still give you alerts about the mouse?

To help solve Help:

Go to Home.
Open the Library folder.
Open the Caches folder.
Look for the "com.apple.helpui" folder.
Rename that little folder to something else, such as "old Help cache folder".
Open Help Viewer. Does the issue return?

If the issue is gone, you're all done!

If the issue persists, use these easy steps to troubleshoot for a problematic Help book. Having a problematic Help book in a Help folder can cause Help Viewer to quit or not behave, even if you are opening an unrelated help book.

Quit Help Viewer, if it's not already quit.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Computer.
Open your Mac OS X volume.
Open the Library folder.
Open the Documentation folder.
Open the Help folder.
Double-click each Help book (one at a time) to open Help Viewer.
When you find one that makes Help Viewer quit unexpectedly or show the spinning beach ball, take it out of the folder. Put it in the Trash, for example (you may be prompted for an administrator password).

[havn't restarted yet, quite busy getting this deadline so I will do this tomorrow]

Reneming the old home/library/cache/com.apple.helpui folder worked! OS X created a new folder (downloaded it I think I saw..) and now it works

Tell me, where did you look this one up?

Snipper,

When there is something that I am not sure of or don't know, I check the Apple Knowledge Base.
http://www.apple.com/support/

The trick is to type in the correct keyword to find the answer.

Let me know how you do.

My native language is Dutch, so I'm not sure what you mean with 'Let know how you do' -> do you mean 'how do you find answers to mac problems'? I usually use Google.

Or do you mean 'How do you do with the Wacom tablet startup alert'?

Snipper,

I am sorry for the confusion. When I said, let me know how you do, I meant after you restart, does the problems come back, or are you rid of all those alert messages.
