TICKET ARCHIVE -> going from osx 10.2.8 to Tiger

Hi there...
I am currently on osx 10.2.8 and will soon install Tiger.
Is there anything i should be aware of when doing this type of migration? (especially because i am skipping a version)
Of course i'll back all my hard drive up, but do i have to reformat the hard drive before reinstalling?
I am on a imac g4 800MHz, 768Mb Ram and 80Gb hard drive, so i think i meet the sys requirements...
If you could please let me know...

Reformatting the drive would be the best way to install Tiger. You'll have a completely new system without any of the files left over from 10.2.8. The system will run better, and a lot of the problems I help with are because of people doing upgrades like this.
When I install a new system, I always wipe the drive and install fresh and never have any problems that way.
Of course, you can just do the upgrade to Tiger from 10.2.8 without reformatting.
It's just a straight forward upgrade.

Hi bobw...
As your reply was positive i went ahead and tried to install OSX 10.4.
I did encounter problems though...
I tried to install it several times, each time it stops the installation just before i can select a destination disk for the system (i manage to only select main language and agree to the licence)...
I've saved the installation log and i am attaching it here...
If anybody could help it'd be great...

As your reply was positive i went ahead and tried to install OSX 10.4.
I did encounter problems though...
I tried to install it several times, each time it stops the installation just before i can select a destination disk for the system (i manage to only select main language and agree to the licence)...
I've saved the installation log and i am attaching it here...
If anybody could help it'd be great...

Do you have the retail Tiger disc? Or is it from another machine?
Are you booting from the Tiger disc when trying to install?
If you do have the retail version of Tiger and are booting from it, take the memory out that you've added and then try installing.

Ok, that's the problem. Apple ships disc that are machine specific. The disc from the PowerBook won't install on your machine.

I've had a conversation with the person who lent me the os..
It's actually from an imac so the problem must be somewhere else...
what i did was to launch the installation from the dvd, then i got prompted to restart the machine, so i did and after restart the installation began from the dvd...until the error..
am i doing something wrong?

I have just completed the installation of Tiger(using the same DVD) into an Imac identic to mine, the only difference being that it had Panther installed (as opposite as my 10.2.8)
I am starting to think there is a hardware problem with my machine (like a damaged section of my hard drive), also because since yesterday i have the impression the whole system is slown down (e.g. it takes longer to start up)
Is there anyway i can establish that? (using disk utility or something?)

You can boot off the OS disc, then use Disk Utility from the Utility Menu to check the disk and see if it reports any problems.
TechTool Pro would be a good utility for this problem, to try an indentify the problem.

I've heard diskWarrior could be a better software to solve this problbem.

could mean the hard drive is failing.
DiskWarrior is the best choice to try and repair this.

I still get the same problem when trying to install tiger.
I ran disk utility and i've noticed that some disks permissions need reapair.
When i ran "repair permissions", the utility crashed (error message: lost connection with disk manager tool).
On top of that, now the system (10.2.8 regularly installed) has problems launching some applications (application launch failure; shared library error;)
I have the feeling that disk Warrior has deleted something (users/shared folder is now empty)
Tried to reinstall the applications with no luck...
Any suggestions?

Open the Library > Receipts folder
Remove these files;
iTunes.pkg, iTunes4.pkg (any iTunes pkg files to the desktop.
Remove iTunes from your application folder.
Now try and run Repair Permissions.
Any errors you get fro Permissions that say Special Permissions or for Widgets can be safely ignored.
When done, boot off the OS disc and run Repair Disk again and see if there are any erors.

iTunes.pkg, iTunes4.pkg (any iTunes pkg files to the desktop.
Remove iTunes from your application folder.

hi there...
following your instructions i was able to repair disk permissions...
however when running verify disk using, disk utility from the os dvd, the application still crashes (same internal error)
i tried again to install tiger with no luck and i still get the application launch failure message...
any thoughts(please) ?

My advice now would be to get a retail version of Tiger and try installing.
My guess is the disc you're using from another machine may be the problem, especially if it's an upgrade disc.

i did install this version of tiger using this very dvd onto an imac identic to mine...
no problems at all...

But you said it installed over Panther not Jaguar (10.2) and that may be the difference.

just to let you know that i have succesfully installed tiger into my imac using my DVD.
All i had to do was to choose the 'erase', option from the DVD disk utility (so booting from the DVD).
After i did that i restarted the computer booting from the DVD, i started the installation and it all went fine.
I've installed the applications and all went ok.
I thought i share this with you, it might help somebody else who will have a similar issue....
