Hi, I have a powerbook 5300cs I want to learn to design banners, buttons

You can use a power book to design graphics, but you will probably want to preview them on a larger monitor screen before using them on a website. Images displayed on a powerbook look slightly different (colors may display darker) and graphics can look very different when enlarged and at other screen resolutions.

So, though a desktop is best for designing graphics, you can use a power book if you must.
Adobe Photoshop is the best choice for graphics design. Many of the plugins that do bevels (for buttons and banners) and drop shadow effects are available as shareware or come bundled with Photoshop.

There are several shareware image editing and paint programs that can do the job (though not as well as Adobe Photoshop!)
Do a search at www.shareware.com, www.download.com, www.tucows.com and other Mac shareware/freeware archives.

A good image creating/editing program is ZD Mac's "The Cheaper Image v1.5" that accepts many Photoshop plug-ins. You can also make buttons with it.
You can download it from:
http://www.zdnet.com/mac/
in the Macdownload section.

For quick image editing, try Graphic Converter. You can apply text to graphics with this program.

*You can also create banners online with The Banner Generator (free).
