Can someone tell me the best way to search in terminal for a file? I am particularly interested in the invisible and encrypted files?

Carolyn, thanx
I found the sparsimage file but can I move it and how do I open it? I tried the control click and then open but no luck. I am in target disk mode for the laptop where the file is. I had tried a reinstall of the ssystem which is when the trouble started. I can not find the location of the file except what disk it is on. I am unssure what folder it is in. I beleive it is users. Can I move it? it only shows up in the spotlight with invisibles running. would grep or another terminal command work better? I am trying to salvage my data.
thanx,
Ellis

HI Ellis,
I think that you would receive more information regarding Terminal if I reposted your ticket back into the main pool.
I've searched Terminal and can't find anything to work with re: invisible/encrypted files... I have the UNIX Manual, and not much there either.
If you are searching for an image with for example a .jpg format, in Terminal at the command line type: ls pictures. When you launch Terminal the default directory is your Home folder. Since you found the 'sparsimage' file, you should be able to copy and paste it directly to the Firewire?????

Hello Ellis,
I am going to send your ticket back to the open pool where
it will get more exposure. Perhaps someone else can help
you with this issue. I do understand your plight and hope
you can get it solved ASAP.
One other place you might post for advice is the
Apple site under the Support tab, Discussions. Many expert
Mac people there!!!
Regards,
Carolyn :-)

First of all: 'grep' is for finding stuff !inside! of files; for searching files by name etc, one'ld use 'find'
Now, let get to the bottom of this. You've booted your laptop in FireWire target mode and want to resque some data.
1) exactly what do you want to accomplish ?
2) what do you understand by invisible files ?
3) what do you understand by encrypted files ?
We might also try to find out what went wrong with your system re-install and get to the bottom of that problem instead:
a) what has gone wrong with your system re-install ?
To all of the above, please provide as many details as you have available. It would have been very nice if you had detailed the extents of your problem already in the original
ticket description.

I am trying to get the info from the filevault file on the laptop. I am not sure what went wrong but when i re-installed the original disk and then upgraded to Tiger I getr stuck in the registration process and it goes back to enering the name etc. I tried to reinstall the software on the partition that had the original start system and the filevault but it would not let me transfer my settings to the new system. I decided not to touch the original partition so I would not erase or write over the old data. I have techtool but I was not sure if I should replace the directory with an earlier one before I tried to move or copy the filevault file. I tried to get file vault to open on my tower but it says there is an error and won' encrypt the data.
thank you for your patience

You simply can't look inside a filevault and extract individual files - the whole thing is encrypted and protected against such attempts; that's the whole idea behind filevault.
To be blunt, you've wasted both your own time as well as tech support by not describing your problem adequately before now.
Now, try the following:
1) create a new user on your tower, using the exact same username, short username and password as you used for the user on the laptop
2) replace the user folder for the new user on the tower with the user folder from the laptop
3) try to log in as the new user
I must confess to not having worked with filevault, but that's how I'ld go about solving a problem like yours.
Another possible solution can be found here
