Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 7200/75
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8.1
Description:
Usually, when Mac's are put to sleep, they spin down the hard disk. On my Mac, if I put it to sleep, the HD spins down, and immediately back up. After half an hour of sleep, the HD spins down (the machine is set to go to sleep after half an hour of idle time). So, the rest o fthe computer is in sleep mode, but the HD wakes up and waits that half hour. For this reason I normally use the server setting on the energy saver to make the HD never go to sleep. I have never actually tried to solve the problem, since there is no starting point, and the problem is not that bad, but it woud be nice if it would work as intended.

Hi, this is Jeremy from No Wonder. This is probably being caused by an extension or control panel. If you have a file protection program like Norton's Filesaver or Techtool Protection, and it's set to update at sleep or idle time it can cause this. Basically, you would want to locate any extension/control panel that might be regularly checking using the hard drive in any way. Then see if there is a setting that will not make this happen (i.e. in Filesaver you can select update at shutdown, and none of the other options, to prevent this from happening)
