I have a hard drive ( 3.5 inch 60 gig Maxtor D740X-6L ) filled with mainly System 10.3 and files accumulated over 4 years. It came from my previous Macintosh in which it was a second ( a slave ) drive. I needed the machine ( a Dual 500 g4 ) in my office as a server using System 9.2.

Now I have this Maxtor D740X-6L that I would like to use in a enclosure so that I could access the drive with my new Mac Mini.

Can anyone recommend a hard drive enclosure to buy for this purpose. A Firewire ( and ? USB ) capable one for sure.

Thanks.

There are dozens of usable enclosures. You can search for them and get prices at www.pricewatch.com. You should do well with an enclosure that supports FW400 and contains its own power supply. Also, look for one that uses the Oxford chipset (911 for FW400, 922 for FW800.)

Be sure to re-jumper the drive to MASTER before installing in an enclosure.

Any advice on what enclosure to actually buy?

Is the cheapest good enough or is there one or two drive enclosures that are better than the others?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Thanks.

LaCie, California Computer, Firewire Direct are good brands, but usually even inexpensive cases are fine if they use the Oxford chipset.
