If you cant get your computer to boot from the dvd ( i guess you have tried booting with the c pressed down) you can try restarting in single user mode :
1.Press the Command and S keys together as the computer starts up.
2.At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

After that you can restart your mac and try checking your drive with disk utility, if the drive is still malfunctioning you ca now try again restarting from your install dvd.

If all this does not work you could go and buy diskwarrior and try restarting with its cd (diskwarrior is great app that does wonders on screwed hard drives)

or if your friend has a mac you could try booting your mac in target disk mode (by pressing T while starting up and then connecting your mac to your friends mac via firewire and then from your friends mac running diskutility (Your macs HD will show as external hd.)

Hope you get your mac fixed!
