Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: No Problem
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Mac IIci
RAM: 8meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.x

Description:
I recently bought a used IIci from work. It does not recognize the internal hard drive (original equipment Apple-labeled 40MB Quantum). If you boot the system from the Disk Tools diskette, it fails to even 'see' the hard disk, although the disk access LED lights (off/on for short pulses at about 2 second intervals)

Thinking the disk was shot, I bought a refurbished 220MB Maxtor drive from MacResQ, installed it, and got the same result.

I have not replaced the system battery yet (it too, is original and dead flat...)

This internal drive is the only SCSI device in the system. The drive has jumpers on it (I assume to set SCSI ID). No docs came with the disk, so I'm not sure if it is set correctly. Is termination required? How do I verify the disk is addressed to ID=0?

What next?

Ronald,
Hi, my name is Ed; I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is

Replacing the battery sounds like a really good idea.

My guess is that the SCSI ID# is probably OK: can't think of a reason why someone would have changed it. However, you can check the SCSI ID# by using SCSI Probe, a freeware utility you can download from ZDNet Mac Download at

As for termination, internal drives are usually terminated at manufacture and need no additional termination.

If for some reason someone has changed it, you will need to go to the manufacturer's website and try to find the jumper settings. If you have trouble doing so, get back to me and I'll try to help.

Good luck,
ed
