Description:
In the icon window of my hard drive, when I click on a photo, for the most part I get "Personal Assist", or sometimes the message, "This is too large to be opened by SimpleText", Occasionaly I'll get "The application program to open this cannot be found".

Chances are that this problem has nothing to do with your hard drive.

The problem seems to be that the Mac thinks that there is no application that will open the photo file you are clicking. This may be because (1) you do not HAVE an application that will open that particular format of photo file, or (2) the Mac doesn't recognize that an application you DO have can open the file.
If you have an application that you think should be able to open the file (e.g., PhotoShop), try to open the application first and then use its File menu to open the file.
If it turns out that none of your applications can open the file, download a shareware utility called Graphic Converter from ZDNet Mac Download at

This utility will open almost any graphic format known.
