I have a hard drive and it's not mounting. It's the Western Digital My Book. I've noticed it taking longer to mount over the past few weeks and only bought it a couple of months ago. I've tried every possible combo: restarting the computer, plugging in different ports, unplugging the wires from all ends and plugging in the wires in different orders. I'm a pro photographer and have tried everything. It worked yesterday and today nothing. HELP!!!

Have you tried opening Disk Utility and checking to see if DU sees the drive and can mount it?

The business of taking longer and longer to mount sounds a bit ominous. Can you hear or feel the drive spinning up?

Yes, DU sees it and does not mount. I've repaired it (successfully) but when I verify it, I get the response that it's unable to verify. I've tried everything. Downloaded and updated software. What to do??

Thank you
Kristina

If it were mine, I would get another backup drive, back up the contents immediately, and seek to have Western Digital replace it, since it's presumably still under warranty.

That info doesn't help me at all!!! I can't mount the drive therefore can not read the contents of the drive therefore back it up is impossible at this stage. Is this site only a forum for non professionals??

Not cerain exactly what you mean by the nonprofessional comment. I do work on Macs professionally but occasionally volunteer some time here. If you were contacting me in my professional status I would have already suggested you bring the drive to me so I could back it up.

So DU could not mount it? Do you have any other computers that you might possibly be able to mount the drive on? Sometimes a drive might mount on a different computer.

If not, it might be time to look into drive recovery software. I believe there are some you can download and try out for free. Or: you could take it to a tech who has drive recovery software.
