TICKET ARCHIVE -> Hard Drives On Left of Finder Aren't Highlighted

Picture this: I'm working on 2 Finder windows moving files and organizing. As I tab (Command+`) between the windows using the Command+3 view suddenly I'm lost. I'm not sure which drive I'm working on because its not highlighted. The highlight goes to the left from column to column but not to the drives. ??? Is there a point to this? Can I do anything to have the drives highlighted? And who wouldn't want the drive they are working in highlighted? Saving battery power?

Charles,

I do understand you problem as at times I have the same problem. There is a work around that can help you determine which window belongs to which hard drive.

Open a finder window, then go to the View Menu at the top of your screen and select Customize Tool Bar. (tool bar is the tools that show at the top of your windows or the title bar of the window. Make sure Tool Bar is not hidden. If under the View Menu it says Show Tool bar, select it).

When that opens, drag the Path icon to the top of the window (the title bar of the window). The Path icon is several lines with an arrow pointing down.

You can also move any other tool you wish to show on the window. You can take off a tool by just dragging from the window to the Customize window.

Now click on the done button.

Now to check which window you have in front of you, just click on the Path icon. It will show you the list of what folders you are in and what drive.

That works....kind of a hassle but at least you found something.

I'm finding that it sure makes things easier to have things labelled with short file names.

BTW, what's that symbol in Finder under File, New Smart Window? There's a Command symbol and to the left of that....??? Why does Apple use symbols that aren't on their keyboards? How stupid is that? (Pretty stupid....)

I found something by accident....aren't most of the world's secrets found by accident? If you keep pressing the left arrow button, then Command+UpArrow, you activate the left window that tells you what drive you're on.

BTW is there a way of showing the left/right/up/down arrows as arrows in a document? It makes talking about keyboard stuff clearer.

BTW....I sure have a lot of BTW's....

Charles,

That symbol stands for the Option key. There is a web page explaining all the special key symbols here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...cdb_symbs.html

Yes, some secrets are found by accident. Then you have to remember what you did to get it.

There is a book that explains many secrets.
The Missing Manual - Tiger edition, by David Pogue.

To show your keystrokes in a document - such as an AppleWorks document, just use the Show/Hide invisibles. This will show you when you hit the return key, tab key, etc.

To show what you are using on your screen, you need to turn on Sticky keys in Universal Access - which is in System Preferences.

BTW - no you don't have too many BTW's.
