First a little background info. My wife just bought a G5 with dual 2.3 gig processors, 2 gigs of ram and dual 500 gig hard drives. We purchased final cut pro 5 hd at the same time. Upon receipt of the equipment and installation of the software we began to put the machine through it's paces. We were expecting great things based on our friends experiences. Unfortunately our expectations were only partially met because we weren't able to access the second drive. We have been using a windows based system for years and are fairly comfortable working with and navigating through the technicalities of computer based editing for video. Other computer systems I have owned have come with instructions and suggestions to maximize performance when adding drives. I have called the mac folks to try and remedy the situation and they informed me that there is a solution, but it would cost 199 dollars to find out the answer.

I just want to know the best way to set the drives up to be used in a video editing studio and a sequence of the steps involved. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jim. Things seem to be snowballing... the other hard drive (which was named something like Macintosh HD) is not showing today. More specifically, the hard drive is showing, but its name is not-- it's blank. It does show the Applications, Library, System, User Guide & Info, and User folder/icons. I don't know if anything else is missing.

Also, when I try to use Finder from the top toolbar, nothing will open. You can see the bottom outline of what looks like a box above it (but off screen). Right mouse clicking on the desktop does nothing. (I was going to change the background of the desktop). I can open Final Cut Pro and the other programs and they seem to be ok.

When I open the second hard drive (currently "Untitled"), it shows the Desktop icon only. There is nothing in the folder.

Both hard drives were installed by Apple. It's a brand new computer. Lenny's been on hold with Apple for awhile already and is patiently awaiting technical support but has yet to get to anyone. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks Jim. Got naming the regular drive taken care of. We tried to access the unnamed drive via the Disk utility and were able to verify the disk but it won't let us repair the disk permissions. Still acts as if it's not there. Do we need to partition it first?

Sorry I've been offline. I think we have it fixed and have the scratch disk set properly. I'll let you know if we run into any more problems. Thanks again for all your help.
