Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerMac 6400/180
RAM: 48meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I have a 28.8 Hayes Accura that I upgraded to 33.6 last year and have been very happy with the connection on my ISP.

They have been using 28.8 modems and I was using Mac OS 7.6.1 or 8.1; along with OT 1.2;1.3 and OT/PPP 1.0.1.

Last month the ISP decided to upgrade their modems to 56K. Now my modem won't connect. The ISP tells me that I need to make sure that the initialisation string needs to have the extra command to have a reliable connection. (I now use the old number and still connect fine.)

Great. The Mac OS now doesn't allow me to tinker with the initialisation string. I have disabled the connect script to troubleshoot and to find that the computer (the modem?) sending random rubbish when the log-in expects the ID and password. I can't overtype, either. I am using the Hayes 28.8 Modem script file in the control panel 'modem'. There is no 33.6 modem script.

I was told to upgrade to Mac Os 8.1 because it would have the ability to modify the modem script file. Well,it doesn't. I have looked at your web page and cannot find a modem script for the 33.6 modem.

If I can't fix this soon, my ISP will complete their migration and I won't be able to connect. HELP !

Thnaks in advance.....

Rob

Robert,

Granted the MacOS doesn't allow you to tinker with the modem scripts, But BBEdit does! BBEdit will allow you to change the text (script) part of the script without disturbing the resource fork. It sounds to me you're able to handle this yourself, given the proper tools. BBEdit Lite (freeware) is available from
