I have a document that is a German/English textbook. Every time I go to save it, it tells me that I can't save it as a Single Language whatever. How do I change it to Multiple Languages. I'm on OX X and Quark 6.5.

I followed the help instructions in Quark, only problem is that the Format menu they say pops up, doesn't. Where can I change this?

Danke

I would ask Quark tech support for assistance, as this sounds like a problem with the application.

Thanks, I'll try that, but they're probably gone.

To save as a multiple Language document, you need QuarkXPress Passport. Regular QuarkXPress only allows one language.

What if I don't want to save it as a Multiple Language document? This is a customer's file set in Germany. I opened it without any hitch and worked on it without problems, UNTIL I went to save. It tells me that I can't save in a Multiple Language format, but I don't want to. Can't I save it in a Single Language format?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried File > Save As > Format > Single Language? I don't believe that will work, but you can try. You may need your German counterpart to save it as Single Language as the document may currently be a Multiple Language one created with Passport.

That's what the help menu told me to do, only problem is that when I go to File/Save As, there's nothing there that says Format.

My options are:

Where:
Version (of Quark)
Type (Project or Template)
Include Preview

That's it. Am I missing something?

I think this may need to go to the Quark Forum- I'll move it back to the group here in case someone else knows. My guess is that you have an English - Single Language copy of Quark. The document is either German Single Language or German Multi Language. So your copy of Quark is unwilling to save in that format. My answer has to be then, get a copy of Quark Passport.

If someone knows more, then they can lend more advice. I also recommend you visit the URL below

Good luck - let me know how you make out.

Todd,

Thanks for your help. On your advice, I will take it to the Quark Forum and see what they have to say. At the very least, you've given me enough sound advice and suggestions to ask the right questions.

Thanks for that.

I've encountered this problem on several occasions. It's a compatibility issue between Word and QXP. Even if you save your document in single language format, importing another Word file which uses, for example, a German dictionary, will cause QXP to give you the same message again.

Unfortunately, it is not an issue to which no-one appears to have found a solution. I contribute on the aforementioned Quark forum too, and have been asked the same question there. It's just something we have to live with, while hoping and praying that Quark get their act together in v7.

Hope that helps,

CQ

Captain,

That sounds like it! The applications I need to have open simultaneously are Quark, Word, and Acrobat Pro. But now that you've mentioned it, it has only happened when I've had Word open.

So when that pop up comes up, will leaving the Language box blank (there's no other option) and Save, actually save my document? I'll give this a try, I did that a few times and my Mac locked up, I'll try closing out of everything else and and see if it works. I guess closing out of Word every time I go to Save is a workaround.

Microsoft strikes again!

Thanks, you've been very helpful.

I have another Quark question.... or at least I think it's a Quark issue but I'm not sure so I'm posting it here.

When scrolling through a document or editing text, when I highlight anything, such as a sentence that needs correction, it works the first time and then after that the highlighting gets really screwy. Sometimes it works in reverse with the highlighted area actually being white (or unhighlighted). Seems to be happening more in Quark but because that's the app I'm using it on, I'm not sure if it's a system thing or not.

Thanks,

Sandra

Hi again,

Sadly, that's another of the little things that add "texture" to QXP these days. Hit [F7] a couple of times to force a redraw. Another one we have to live with, I'm afraid.

Too bad . . . my F7 key's going to wear out.

What happened to Quark? It used to be so reliable. When I can, I work in Quark 4. For me, it's always been rock solid and being in my business, I never mess with a good thing. Unfortunately, since they never built the bridge between 4 and 6, guess we all have to swim.

I look forward to the day when the folks who decide what goes into these applications realize that less IS more.

Thanks again, Cap!

Funny you should say that. If you go to the Quark forum, following the link posted above, you'll find hundreds of people criticising Quark for the mess they've made of QXP v6.

Rather than fixing the problems in v6, they've decided to release v7 – an upgrade for which we will have to pay! Of course, if past performance is anything to go by, v7 may fix some of the v6 problems, but will no doubt introduce a whole new set of bugs peculiar to the new release!

That's why a lot of my customers are now switching to InDesign. Quark had such a good thing going for so long, I can't believe the garbage coming out of it these days.

As Mozart said in the movie, Amadeus... "too many notes."

So we won't be able to upgrade to Quark 7? They want us to shuck out another grand?

I started in this business as a linotype operator. I've been in this industry from hot metal to cold type, Quark has always been the closest thing I could get to for quality typesetting. But now it seems as though they're geared toward web applications more than print. Where's the artform?

We need someone like Apple to come out with a dedicated typesetting machine (like we had in the old days) so folks like me who are not into the bells and whistles and all the cute stuff, can just do our jobs.

What would the monks say?
