Hello I Recently bought my iBook (as is) from my school and they did not remove the privalages. I can not download updates or explor the files needed to use this computer any further. What do I need to do to remove the settings? Everything I try says "You do not have permission to open the application "Application's Name". Contact the person who administers your computer or your network administrator for assistance."

Vince,
Welcome to macosx.com

Follows the instructions for resetting the admin password in this article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=106156-en

In short:
1. Boot up from the Mac OS X Installer CD.
* 2. Once you have reached the initial Installer screen, select Reset Password from the Installer menu. This will automatically launch the Reset Password application.
* 3. With Reset Password active, select the Mac OS X volume which contains the password you wish to change.
* 4. After selecting the Mac OS X volume, click on the popup menu for the admin user that you want to reset the password.
* 5. Once you have selected the admin user, type in the new password that you want in both the "Enter a new password for this user" and in "Reenter the new password for this user" fields.
* 6. Now click on the Save button to save the new password for this user.
* 7. After clicking on the Save button, go ahead and quit the Reset Password application which will bring you back to the initial Installer screen.
* 8. From the initial Installer screen, select Quit Installer for the Installer menu.
* 9. You will then be prompted on whether you want to quit, select the Restart button in this dialog to restart your machine.

I hope you have the original OS install discs, otherwise
no chance !

By the way, which OS do you run ?

Regards
Philippe

(1) Stephen
If in the school, they're mac tech minded people, then, yes it is not normal that someone has not clean the ibook before selling it or is able to give the admin password.
If in the school, they are 3 ibooks among one hundred Dells, I'm quite sure that nobody care about the mac stuff: "buy it for a pence or we trash it"
If the ibook have been selled by a schoolmate, it is another story...

(2) for the other point, without the install CDs, no chance

-> go back to school with your machine and ask the vendor for the official install Cds and/or the admin password.
If he refuses, you can contact Apple (or go to Apple store nearest your home) to explain the problem; if you can prove you have legally buy the ibook, I'm sure they can help you in restting the pasword. But, one day or another, you'll have to buy the Tiger DVDs
