Hi there. I have a font issue. I do not use a font management system and am having trouble with fonts showing up in my applications (ie Illustrator).

For example, I tried to add Garamond & Cooper Black to my font folder under library and when I restarted Illustrator, it does not show up. I even tried rebooting my computer. When I try to use Font Book, it does not allow me to add the fonts. I tried it with another font and it did work.

This is driving me a little crazy as I have tried putting the font files in various font folders on my hard drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Catherine,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

What is the extension that follows the name of those fonts? It should be .dfont or .ttf

Did you place these fonts in the library>font folder. - Not the library in your home folder but the Library that is sitting on your hard drive by itself.

How many fonts do you have in that font folder?

Hi Cheryl:

Thank you for your assistance - it's appreciated more than you know!

The font I am having trouble with is Cooper Black. It does not have an extension on it and it is listed as a font suitcase.

What's interesting is that I put it in the library>font folder like I normally do and it doesn't show up in Illustrator.

And it doesn't show up in the Font Book. What's interesting is that I've used Font Book with other fonts and have not had a problem.

I have 96 items currently in the folder.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Catherine

Catherine,

It could be that Illustrator does not like it. Does it show up in any other application such as AppleWorks?

Drag that font out of the font folder, then:

Insert the disc that contains the new font, or copy it to your hard disk from another location.
Double-click the icon for the font in the Finder. Font Book opens and displays the font so you can see what the font looks like.
Click Install Font.

The font is automatically installed in the Library folder of your home folder so it is available only to you.

To make the font available to all users of the computer, drag it to the Computer folder in the Collection column of Font Book.

I am sure you have tried this, but try it again. Let me know if you get any error messages.

Hi Cheryl:

I have tried what you said.

I took the font out and then put a new version on my desktop. Then I double-clicked on the font and it did open Font Book. However, it did not display the font.

When I choose from Font Book to add the font through the menu bar, it seems like it is going to choose it. I hit okay and nothing shows up.

When I put it in the Library>Fonts folder, it does show up in Photoshop, but it's all jagged.

Do you think something is wrong with this font?

Thanks,
Catherine

Catherine,

It sounds like you do not have the full font file/family. Where did you obtain this font? It could be just a sample and not the full suitcase.

Some font web sites do have free downloads, but in order to get the full font family you need to purchase it.

If you did purchase it, see if you can download a new copy or get the CD with the entire font family on it.

Hi Cheryl:

You're right! I did not have the whole suitcase family! I only had part of the font.

It's working now. Thanks so much for your help!
