I was downloading music from limewire. My computer started to act up and i thought i might have spyware on my computer. I downloaded sofos anti virus and internet clean up to detect if there was a virus or spyware. None indicated. My menu bar changed on its own. Now Limewire will not run or load; i use modzilla and it takes my computer about 5 minuets to allow modzilla to load. Any application at startup takes forever to open if it does open. I downloaded a new verson of limewire but that application will not work. now i am stuck with spy alerts for every thing i do asking permission from me. Why does it take so long for the applications to load up for me to be able to acess them; its the same with safari as well. oh i am on an ibook g3; mac osx 10.2.8. what can i do to trouble shoot this problem. I want to take the security alert off since it pops up ever few minutes and i know its the program i installed internet clean up( i think with that i just answered my won ? go to that application preferences.)Why does it take so long for apps to load?

Can your iBook record CD's? If so, I would first make backups of all the important stuff. If not, well then try to find someone with a Mac who will let you connect your iBook to their's using a firewire cable. Your iBook would be off when you do this. Connect the two Macs, and turn on your iBook, but hold down the T key. Evenutally the firewire symbol should appear on the iBooks screen, and it should mount on the desktop of the other Mac. At that point you could copy over the files you want to keep. The eject your iBook, disconnect it, and turn it off.

(Why am I suggesting this? Well something has gotten really messed up on your iBook. I want you to have backups, just in case what I am about to recommend does not work, and you have to reinstall the OS.)

Now locate your OS X CD, or one that is at least 10.2.8 or higher. Power on your iBook. After it boots, put the OS X CD in the drive, and restart your iBook, holding down the C key until it has finished booting from the CD. You will now be at the beginning of a series of screens which would start the installation process. But we want to avoid that. When you get to the screen where an Options button appears, click that. Then select Disk First Aid (I think it's called that in 10.2.x). You then want to select Repair Disk. Rerun that process until it gives you the message that no errors were found. Then tell it to Repair Permissions. When that process finishes, restart and let your iBook boot normally from the hard drive. Eject the OS X CD. do you still have the problem at this point?

If you do, then open System Preferences, open Accounts, then select your user account. Then click the Login Items button (it may not be called exactly that in 10.2) then uncheck everything. Now restart your computer. Login in as you normally do. Do you still have the problem? If you don't then one of those items which loads at startup was causing the problem. You can re-enable them one at a time to find the problem. Here's someting else to consider; while a G3 iBook is fine for many things, there is a limit to what it can do, especially if you have low memory. You may just have too much stuff loading at startup for your machine to function properly.

If you still have the slow loading problem, even after disabling the startup items, then it's time for a fresh install of the OS. You probably don't wnat to hear that, but that's my opinion.

Well thank you for writing me back so quickly. I have not reinstalled the system software yet but i did do norton utilities and did disc doctor and there were some major fixes needed. So i ran that program and it fixed the page loading once i am connected to mozilla (i can get to my mail etc.. and other web pages with out it crashing or not loading; that problem is fixed.} I just turned off the start up programs that launched at startup. Now i have not restarted to see if it helped the booting problem yet but wanted to know buy using norton utilities and optimizing the disc is that the same thing as using the osx cd for doing disc doctor? I really do not want to reinstall everything and want to do everything i can to avoid this. I will see if Titaniam toast reads my burner and i am not sure what to save to disk or what will be compatible since i would have to upgrade to 10.2.8. So how do i save my favorite places and book marks? Since what you are sugjesting i will loose all of this right? is there a way i can save mozilla entirely and put it back on my computer without loosing all the info?Well for now i will do what you sugested before reinstalling everything. Thank you for your help! Heidi

Norton Utilities and some other programs can sometimes repair disks that too damaged for Disk Utility to fix. My favorite for that is Disk Warrior. If these programs are efective, then a reinstall can probably be avoided. Let;s see how effective that route might be before worrying about anything else

The archive and install method should work. Then you may be able to just copy the programs and files from the folder created. which will be called "old system". It will turn out that some programs may need to be reinstalled, but not all of them. Also the data files should be preserved for you. But be selective. Copy the programs and the associated files back one at a time. It's possible you can idnetify one of them as a problem.

Also, recognize that the G3 chip is not as fast as the newer ones. Be careful about what you ask it to do.

You haven't mentioned how much memory you have in that iBook. It's possible that you could find a resonably priced module from a place such as crucial.com .
I mention that because additional memory can help improve the operation of computer, and thus extend the usefulness. Memory isn't expensive, and in that iBook, all you have to do is release the keyboard. The slot is right below the keyboard.

i just put new memory in let me go check....memory says 192mb and prosessor is 466mhz power g3. i have only been able to upgrade it to 10.2.1; trying to get up to 10.2.8, but i also need other original applications like stuffit expandeer to open aplications but finding it hard to down load or find or the down load needs original program and or it like over an hour for it to download. now what my new friend?

Okay so what you have is one of the original iBooks that came in colors, not one of the revised iBooks that are now in the all white plastic case. That's what the processor speed would indicate.

Well, I am sorry to have to tell you this. I have never dealt with one of that era, and I really don't feel qualified to dianose problems with one of the original iMacs. So I am going to put this back into the Open Pool. Someone else may be able to help you.
