When I try to boot from os x cd the apple logo just shifts and is pixelated in the upper left corner. I can't get into single user mode.
I have reset pram and nvram. I have no added memory. All I seem to be able to do is use open firmware. Are there any commands which would allow me to format the hard drive in open firmware?

Hi Sean

You can't format a drive in Open Firmware.

Does the Mac boot normally on the system that's installed?

Reset CUDA or PMU (depending on which Mac you have).

Try cleaning the disk with a soft dry rag.

If the CD is an older version than what came with the machine, or the disk is bad, this can happen.

What model Mac do you have?

What version system came with it?

What system is currently installed on it?

Sean

This page has instructions for resetting the PMU for your model;

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

If this doesn't help, call Apple. It's new and could have a hardware problem.

Shift Control Option power seems to be the way for me.
The power button they mention is the one and only that shuts down the pc and not a keyboard key right?

Sean

Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard

It's the Power key on the keyboard according to the page.

Blah... nothing seems to work.
Even tried booting Darwin and I get the prohibitory sign.
Can you use discwarrior from open firmware on cd?

Sean

No, you can't.

I would call Apple, it's a new machine, they have to take care of it.
