Boot up your Macintosh using the original CD or DVD that came with it and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and to repair permissions. If you're still having the problem, I'd suggest downloading a freeware app called Yasu from versiontracker.com or macupdate.com and basically, doing everything it can do (check all the boxes), then restart. You could use other similar utilities like maintain, Onyx, Cocktail, etc. but they are shareware. If that also doesn't work, please let us know. There's lots more you can do.
One other simple option (which is what I'd do) is run the latest combo updater for your OS. For example, if you're running 10.4.6 (I'm assuming you're running OS 10.x), download the combo updater from Apple's website and run it, even though you're already using 10.4.6. It replaces a whole host of files and usually, this kind of problem goes away.
HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.
