Hi,
I'm new to Mac Os X and to Mac in general.
My job requires me to use a Mac.
All I need to do is remove an application from
the dock.
Every article and every book that I have read says
to just drag it out of the dock.
I've tried that, I've tried every possible keyboard combination as well.
If I click the icon + control the only option I have is to show in finder.
I simply am unable to drag out of the dock.
I'm trying to remove Firefox, I unmounted the image on the desktop and now it shows up in the dock as a
folder as a folder with a question mark on it.
I just want to remove the question marked folder out of the dock.
I've been in IT for 5 years now, I can normally figure things out mainly in the Windows,Unix, or Linux worlds, but this not being able to remove
an application is a new one.
Any advice, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

John, welcome on macosx.com
You do not tell us which OS you run, but if you click on the icon on the dock and maintain the click , does a pop-up arrives with the "Suppress from the dock" item ?
Regards
Philippe

Sorry about that. It's Mac OS X 10.2.8
The only popup that I get is a "show in finder",
I don't get a supress from dock popup.
Also, the show in finder popup doesn't indicate
whether or whether not to show it in the finder.

Ah yes, right, forget this thing
Ye, to remove from the dock an application's icon, the application must be off before

Phillipe,
I've tried that as well. I have even gone so far as
to force quit the application before I tried to remove it.
The icon itself is a folder with a question mark on it,
which I assume means it can't find the program.
Unless, I'm not dragging it off the dock correctly,
It won't let me drag it out of the dock.
I'm assuming dragging in the Mac world is the same as the
Windows world.
I really appreciate you taking the time and trying to help me.

Ok
Do you still have the .dmg file of Firefox ? Could you remount the image ?
if yes, now, could you get rid of the icon in the dock ?
Other try.
In the Finder view, select your hard drive on the left the pane, just a the top of this left pane.
Then, on the right pane, browse to Library -> Caches
There is a file named com.apple.dock.iconcache.501 or com.apple.dock.iconcache.502.
Move it to the Desktop
Could drag the "?" folder icon out of the Dock ?

No, I still don't have the .dmg file for firefox.
I do however I have firefox still installed and I want
to keep it.
I just wanted to remove the invalid folder firefox
folder that's in the dock right next to the working
firefox folder.
I wish I could post a screenshot so you could exactly see
what I'm talking about.
Thanks I will definitely try one of those ideas when I get
to work tomorrow.

I was not able to drag the com.apple.dock.iconcache.501
out of the cache but, I was able to delete it.
After I restarted the Icons that I wanted removed turned
into blank white spaces, and as far as I'm concerned
I can live with.
Thanks again for all your help.
