Hello again, thank you for the speedy reply! I downloaded Software Update 1.3.1 but, when I tried to install it I got the message that there was an error and try to install again. I did so to no avail. I used finder and found that I have Software Update 1.0 but, I believe that that was on 9.2.2.
As for Mac OS 10.0.4, It was out of the box 10.0.3 and I did the 10.0.4 update. I had no idea it was beta.
Any help you could give would be great.
Is the reason that the Mac OS X is so slow because I still have Mac OS 9.2.2 on my Mac? Is it using to much memory?
Thanks Again,
Bill

I'm not sure how to respond, as you have started a new thread, instead of posting to your original thread.
Updating to the last update for 10.0 will not give you much improvement if you are looking for speed. 10.0 was not exactly a beta, but most users agree that there is a huge improvement to upgrade to 10.1, another huge improvement of speed and stability by upgrading to 10.2, and then 10.3 and now 10.4 are each steps forward. 10.1 was the first version that could be called usable for other than a hobbyist. A lot of commercial software began to be released that was actually useful. Each new .2 then .3 and now .4 has improved on that. You are on the generation where it began, but before OS X really became useful - OK?
10.0 is slow acting, because it's slow, not because of other software...
Here's a page that provides true installer sets in a variety of configurations.

One reason for OS X to run slow - any version - is if the hard drive is almost full. You should maintain a minimum of 2 GB free space, and that's if you have a small hard drive (less than 10 GB) on a larger hard drive, keep more than 15% free space.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi thanks for the info, I will check it out. So, do you have any idea way the software update just says "software update has not been run yet" when run. I tried to update from software update 1.0 to 1.3.1 but it says there was an error and to try install again. Software Update 1.3.1 is in the preferences folder but is the only thing not checked? Oh I am using a lime green iMac 333 which I have been updating since Mac OS 8.6.
Thanks,
Bill

If you try the software update control panel, do you get any listings for software that can be updated?
I really have no clue about what version you are trying to use. If it is for OS 9, then the last update for that software update is version 1.2. Can you give me any more information?

Hello again,
The only thing that happens when I open the Software Update in Mac OS 10.0.4 it opens, lets me search for updates but then no updates come up. All its says is that "Software Update has not been used yet". After trying to install Software Update 1.3.1 it says that there was an install error and to try the install again. I looked for Software Update in Finder and then look in the get info under file and it says Software Update v1.0. Any ideas on why it will not install? As I said it (v1.3.1) is in the preferences file but it is the only thing that is unchecked.
Thanks,
Bill

You are just spinning your wheels at this point - no progress...
I have no idea why the version of Software Update that you have, won't work.
It certainly isn't accomplishing anything for you. It won't update anything in OS X. You can't update OS X when you are booted to OS 9. The Software update for OS 9 can't run when you are booted to OS X.
What do you really want to do? You may be completely up-to-date with OS 9. And you should get an update for OS X to take you beyond 10.0 You can't get there through Software Update. You have to use an update that installs from a disc.

Ok I get it I can't use software update.......useless!
Ok onto a different problem if I may. I have reinstalled 10.0.3 back from 10.0.4. Either way I cannot seem to even use any of my usual game playing sites like Uproar, Yahoo Games, or Pogo. When I try to play a game my i Mac G3 333 MHZ running Mac OS 10.0.3 either freezes or gives me the rainbow spinner of death. Any suggestions? When I used Mac OS 9.2.2, I could use the site no problem. However I got Mac OS X because a lot of the games out there are recommended for Mac OS X......what an endless web they weave!
Any who, any help you may give would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bill

The best advice that I have - update your OS X to something newer.
10.0.x just did not operate very stabily, Even 10.1.x is a great improvement.

OK....how could Apple have sold such crap? I thought maybe I had to fix the Java settings or something. I had no problem playing games with Mac OS 9.2.2.
Any suggestions about how to find out if the Runtime for Java is even working?

The 'such crap' was, and is a great GUI to a good operating system (Unix), and has greatly with each new generation of OS X. You can relate OS X 10.0 to a similar level with Windows 95 - mostly good at the time, but newer versions have mostly been vast improvements over previous versions. A Windows user can rightly ask the same question of Microsoft about Windows 95.
At least Apple has not had the step back that was Windows ME.

What you have was released over 4 years ago, and is the version 1 (or more correctly version zero) of OS X. A lot of software is not too presentable with the version 1. The old version of Java support with the OS X 10.0 - if you are trying to work with that - is another good reason to upgrade to a newer version of OS X.
