Hello. I am a student and I need help transferring files between home and school. I have a flash drive, but they are not allowed.

I like box.net, but it just takes so long to load.

Does anyone know of a free non-ad based storage service for students?

ALSO

I am looking for web based storage for all of my photos. I have about 3gb of photos...if any can recommend a cheap or free service to upload the photos to, that would be awesome.

Really? No Flash drives? That's silly, most colleges allow them because floppies are useless and unreliable.... Perhaps it's because many of them are MP3 players. I know they are banned at some companies due to espionage or data theft issues. But I don't get why they would be banned at a school.

http://flickr.com/ a free photo storage sharing service

If you or your parents have Internet at home it's provided by an ISP (Internet Service Provider). Just about all of them offer free webspace accounts. This will allow you to publish your own web pages. They will also allow you to get to the webspace via FTP. You can then connect to the webspace from school using your id/password and upload/download files. There will be a limit on the amount of space you have but many ISP's have increased it quite a bit as of late. I wouldn't be surprised if they give you a gigabyte of free space to utilize. Of course, the schools network admins would have to allow FTP traffic on the their network.

You could also use the ISP's webspace to host your photos. I doubt you could store all 3GB's but those are probably uncompressed. You can reduce the size of the original photos and you can put more up on a website. Even flickr doesn't allow full hi-res photos, it downsizes them.

A Google Search for Free online Storage reveals quite a few services:

Hi Leonard,

For your photos, I would say use Google's Picasa. You can download an app where you can edit your pictures and then send them to the online web-albums. Though Picasa is Windows only, you can still put your pictures directly onto the Google Servers.
Hope this Helps,

Ferdinand

I really like picasa, because it makes it so easy for the viewer to find the photos :-)
