I have upgraded my year 2000 ibook from OS9.2 to Tiger. This required a clean install as there is only about 9.5gb memory on the HD. We increased the ram and Tiger purred in nicely. But I've lost iMovie and all the Classic items such as Appleworks. When I try to load the original install discs a window pops up saying Classic is already installed but it won't come out.

You are really low on hard drive space; OS X likes to have about 20% of the disk free for use as swap files. But to address your question: From what I recall, the original install install Classic and the apps that come with it or nothing at all. I would suggest that you delete Classic from your boot drive (make sure any original work, fonts you bought, etc are backed up; to play it safe, copy the Classic folder to a hard drive or DVD or flash drive first) , and reinstall Classic and the associated apps from your install disks onto your boot drive. iMovie came on it's own install disk, as far as I can recall and I don't remember for sure whether there ever was a Classic version of iMovie.
HTH and please let us know what happens.

Hello ishanB.
Here's what happens when I open the the install icon on the iBook Software Install disc. I get a message that says
*Classic will not open files in "System Folder" on "iBook install CD" because the disc is read only.* I have the 4 software restore discs which came with the iBook but I am loathe to use them in case they are clean install only and wipe the HD and I have to load Tiger again. Will they offer a partial install?
I think that you have hit the nail with your comment about really low HD space.
I am temporarily in the USA where I use this iBook but at home in the UK I have just bought an iMac G5. If I bring the Tiger disc(s) gor that machine when I return, do you think that I will be able to take the iMovie app from there and use it with this G3 system?
The Apple Store say that only by installing iLife will I get i Movie again but I really don't want to spend another $79 on this upgrade which has already cost $329.
regards
Bill
